Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 05/03/2016 (3683 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Acne, psoriasis, eczema, skin cancer, dermatitis, rosacea, vitiligo, brown spots, scarring, wrinkles. I’m guessing that you’ve heard of at least one or two of these skin conditions and there’s a chance you may also be affected by one of them.
While many of us desire smooth, even, healthy-looking skin (maybe even with a bit of a glow!), the reality is, it’s not always easy to achieve the results we’re looking for. We’re fortunate though, to have someone nearby who can help if we need it.
Dr. Jason Sneath is a certified dermatologist and the only dermatologist in Brandon. In fact, he’s the only dermatologist between Winnipeg and Regina. With a high-demand specialization such as this, we’re very fortunate that Sneath set his sights on setting up a practice in Brandon.
“I love downtown Brandon and always have. I didn’t grow up in Brandon, but visited often and when we did we’d always explore a bit. I had always thought that I’d maybe like to set up a shop here,” Sneath said.
“There hadn’t been a dermatologist in Brandon for about 10 years prior to my coming here, so I knew there was a real need in this area. When I was a med student, I thought that I might want to come out here to practise, so I contacted the health authority and it was actually back in 2008 when we made a deal. I still had all my training to do, so it’s been a few years in the making.”
Sneath’s practice, SKIN Clinics, is located in downtown Brandon at 1031 Rosser Ave. in what is known as the historic Chrest/Fraser Block that was built in 1890. Sneath and his staff recently celebrated the clinic’s second anniversary and he’s grateful for the support he has been shown.
“We have a really great staff and we’ve grown from having two people just two years ago to having six full-time employees and one part-time, so it’s been a very rapid growth. We’ve essentially outgrown our space already and we’re looking at expanding into the second and third floors. It’s in the very early planning stages, but that’s really exciting for us,” Sneath said.
In terms of services, the clinic provides treatment for a broad range of conditions, using the latest technology and most advanced products available. Some of their skin care services include: narrowband UVB, intense pulsed light, dermal fillers, laser hair removal, laser resurfacing, Botox, phototherapy and esthetic services.
For the medical dermatology side of the practice, Sneath’s patients must be referred by a family physician or other doctor for any medical-related skin problems.
However, complimentary cosmetic consultations can be booked directly.
“I have a really interesting medical dermatology practice as I see basically everything, people of all age groups and all sorts of skin problems. I see a lot of skin cancer in Brandon, but most of the time it’s very manageable and not serious,” Sneath said.
“I also have a fairly big surgical practice because this is an interest of mine, and because there are no plastic surgeons in Brandon. I try to do a lot of my own surgeries, the ones that I know I can manage. I also have patients with acne, rosacea, eczema and psoriasis — it’s quite a broad spectrum.”
A new service that they’ve just recently added to the menu at SKIN Clinics is CoolSculpting. This is a non-evasive, fat-reducing procedure that literally freezes away fat.
“You get about a 20 per cent reduction in fat per session. It’s often used in the abdominal area to get rid of those unwanted bulges, but they just released a new applicator for under the chin for people who have excess fat in that area. It takes about a month to see the results, but it’s pretty amazing. The thing to keep in mind is that it’s for people who are 20-40 pounds off their ideal body weight, it’s more for sculpting. It’s not a replacement for diet and exercise,” Sneath said.
Sneath and his wife Robyn also own Fraser Sneath Coffee, which is a quaint coffee shop in the front entrance of the clinic that provides a unique waiting area for SKIN Clinics patients.
