Opinion

Hey there, time traveller!

The Wheat City Retreat is a home away from home. It is also one of Brandon’s newest businesses that launched this past April.

This new venture is an executive condominium that is available for rent on a short-term basis with daily, weekly and monthly rates. Manager Michelle Budiwski said the property is perfectly suited to meet the needs of a variety of clients.

“It’s ideal for business people who are travelling to the city, user groups, community groups, people who are putting on workshops, or it can even be used for interim housing while families are waiting for a possession date on their new home,” said Budiwski.

The Wheat City Retreat is located at 456 McDiarmid Drive and is owned by John Ellis and Palla Gillis. It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large living area and is fully furnished.

Budiwski said they have hosted dinner, cocktail and staff parties and that it would be great for bachelorette/

bachelor parties, or family gatherings such as small reunions or when celebrating a wedding or graduation. It’s basically your home away from home, especially with extra services such as housekeeping, grocery shopping, catering and bartending that are available.

The location of the property allows for easy access and staying at the facility can be an economical option for larger groups, whether it be for business or pleasure.

“Price point-wise, you’re getting a lot of value. With three bedrooms and two bathrooms, it’s less expensive than getting two or three hotel rooms. You can also do all your own cooking if you want to, so it’s an economical option for groups of friends or family that want to all stay together,” Budiwski said.

A unique feature of the property is that all of the artwork on display is on consignment from local artists. Guests are able to purchase the artwork and the artists get 100 per cent of the sales.

“This is really neat because it changes the decor all the time. Plus, it’s a great way to showcase local artists and provides them with another avenue to sell their products.”

Accolades all around

This was a great week for local businesses to celebrate!

Congratulations to Lady of the Lake for being a finalist in the Manitoba Tourism Awards in the Award of Distinction category. This award recognizes a business or organization that is committed to the excellence of Manitoba’s tourism industry.

The gala dinner for this year’s celebration of the Manitoba tourism industry will be held in Winnipeg on Oct. 4.

Also, kudos to NetSet Communications (Outstanding Medium Business) and Progressive Sanitation (Outstanding Small Business) as both companies are in the finals for the MBiz Awards, which are sponsored by the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce. The awards gala in Winnipeg, at which the winners will be recognized, takes place at the end of October.

Best of luck to all three businesses — let’s hope they bring home some nice, shiny hardware!

Is it really that time?

The sign went up this week at 3408 Victoria Ave. for Halloween Alley (former Zellers location). I spoke briefly with local store manager Brenda Kryschuk, and she said that they plan to open very soon (possibly even today!). Can you believe that Halloween is just 44 days away?
