Bright lights, parties, sweet treats … before we know it, we’ll be enjoying all the festivities of the Christmas season. For many local businesses in the hospitality industry, this is without a doubt one of the busiest times of the year.

While the folks at Thunderbird Bowl, Huggy’s Family Restaurant and Huggy’s Neighbourhood Sports Bar & Grill generally start prepping for the holiday season well in advance, this year they were busy sprucing things up earlier than ever.

Local owners Trevor Peters and Debbie Nadon (who also happen to be brother and sister) opened the three businesses 15 years ago, so they thought it was time to freshen things up in the sports bar. They shut down operations for 30 days earlier this fall while local contractors rolled in to do a complete renovation on the second-floor bar.

“When you’re in the food and beverage business, staying modern and relevant to consumer trends is very important,” Peters said.

Located at 2140 Currie Blvd., Huggy’s Neighbourhood Sports Bar & Grill is already a popular hangout for sports enthusiasts, but with the new decor, seating and additional televisions screens, it’s sure to be a hit on big game nights.

The bar is unique in the fact that it’s located in Thunderbird Bowl, so along with shooting a game of pool or playing darts in the lounge, visitors can also try their hand at five- or 10-pin bowling. In addition, Peters said they’re always working hard to provide a good selection of bar grub.

“A varied daily menu sets us apart from the traditional lounges. New menu items are always being created and offered, and this is one of the ongoing benefits of being an independent business owner versus a franchise,” Peters said.

Whether you’re looking to host a Christmas party, a children’s birthday party or business meeting, the synergy between the three businesses in the facility provides a fun and entertaining atmosphere.

“We host all kinds of parties, but we also offer companies the opportunity to take a break from traditional meetings by hosting a team building meeting or what we call ‘play therapy’ events here at the centre. They can come in and have a team meeting, enjoy some snacks or lunch, then play billiards or darts or spend time in the bowling centre,” Peters said.

That sounds like the perfect meeting to me!

Lighting up the city

Marty Kauk and his team are working like Santa’s Elves to get everyone throughout the city in the Christmas spirit.

Kauk is the owner of Wheat City Electric, and this fall expanded his business by offering a new service. Operating under Wheat City Lights, they now install Christmas lights and decorations on residential homes and businesses.

Kauk said he had noticed companies in other cities offering a similar service and thought that it would be something of interest to Brandonites as well.

“So many people like having Christmas lights and decorations, but they don’t always enjoy putting them up and taking them down or they can’t,” Kauk said.

“Not everyone has a large extension ladder or wants to be climbing up a ladder on a two-storey home when it’s freezing cold outside. We can do trees and harder-to-reach areas with our bucket truck, which makes it so much easier. We had the manpower and equipment already, so I thought this would be a good fit to go along with my existing company.”

Although they expect to be the busiest during the winter holiday season, their services will be available year round when decorative lighting is needed for other special events and occasions.
