Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 23/11/2011 (5308 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
I am writing in response to the Special Tribute Edition — Flood Fight 2011.
The article states the City of Brandon and several communities within western Manitoba experienced record-setting flooding this spring. It also details the timeline between dealing with the flood and how the process of cleanup took place and is continuing in many communities. One line that I made note of in particular was “with the help of the provincial and federal governments” the floodwaters were fought back and the communities were protected.
My question to you is this — have you visited the Rural Municipality of Strathclair in the last six years? Not only were we flooded in 2005, but again this year! We have received no help from the provincial or federal governments, not financial help or physical help, not even a single word of encouragement. Has Premier Greg Selinger paid us a visit? Not a chance.
The problem that we face here is not an issue with a dam or an issue with a river running through our town but an issue of a lake that is overflowing and a fight between neighbouring people as to how to drain the excess water. And so it sits — and I mean sits — on my property. My fences are down under water, my land, hay bales and even my lane that leads to my house has all been covered in water. There has been nothing done and every phone call, every letter that I have written has not been responded to.
How can you say that the provincial and federal governments have helped us? (I certainly cannot.) I wrote letters to the Brandon Sun and the Winnipeg Free Press (nothing was printed), numerous emails to the Water Stewardship office, and again, no reply.
I read an interesting article in the Oct. 31 edition of the Brandon Sun about the people who live in the Shellmouth area. It sounds very similar to our situation here especially when they have made numerous phone calls to MAFRI and EMO and have not so much as received a response or a visit.
What is wrong with this government and its processes? Why are we in such a tough situation, yet newspaper articles can be written to praise the provincial and federal governments?
Isn’t it time that we get some answers and some help?
