I never usually write in to the Brandon Sun, but I really hope you’ll publish this, I have tears in my eyes as I type this out.
I think about the visitation of violence and death upon children in Connecticut, and I am saddened, not for the same reasons that everyone else is saddened.
My sadness comes from the realization that in many other nations there are children being tortured and slaughtered that none pay any attention to. The child soldier bleeding out in the jungles of Africa is forgotten, the little girls who are mutilated by circumcision are cast aside, the children in American ghettos catching stray bullets are deemed nothing more than a statistic.
Why do you think that these kids are any more important than the countless others who die around the globe? You might think that I am a jerk who is trivializing a great tragedy, you are wrong, you are the jerk because you think that because I point out the deplorable state of the world that I am somehow detracting from the tragedy of today.
The world is a sickening place in many respects, because you can hide away from the truly nasty facts. If someone points out that the shooting was just another disgusting moment in the horror show that we call the human experience, then you are truly a low human being.
If it takes something of this magnitude to draw you out of your darned social networking, self-centred, boring life, so that you might actually see the world for what it is and find some semblance of drive to perhaps create change for the better, then so be it.
This is my cry to the ignorant masses. You either wake up or we all give up.
I am sickened and exhausted from what our species has become.
