Hey there, time traveller!

The August 11, 2014 Brandon Sun article, “Dealing with gambling addiction,” raised some important issues. As identified in the article, problem gambling can devastate individuals and families. We thank the Brandon Sun for shedding light on this often underreported issue and informing people of the available supports.
We wanted to take the opportunity to provide additional information and clarify a few things regarding the programs and services offered by the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM). AFM is a provincial Crown organization, primarily funded by Manitoba Health, Healthy Living and Seniors to provide addictions services and support healthy behaviours. AFM also receives funding from the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation.
In 2013/14, AFM’s Brandon facility provided alcohol, drug and gambling addiction treatment services to 2,191 people. Of those, 88 individuals sought problem gambling specific services such as AFM’s residential problem gambling treatment program and individual and group counselling sessions.
AFM also has programs and services available for people experiencing problem gambling as one among other addictions issues. Supportive services are also available for people who are affected by someone else’s gambling. AFM’s services are available in communities across the province. Telephone counselling is available for people unable to meet in person with a counsellor.
For more information about AFM’s programs, services and educational materials, please visit our website at afm.mb.ca. If you or someone you love is experiencing problems with gambling, call our 24-Hour Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-463-1554.
