The Brandon University Bobcats put out a “help wanted” message teams ideally don’t need to share a week before training camp.

“Interested in being part of a championship team? BU men’s soccer is looking for a goalkeeper for the upcoming season,” Monday’s tweet reads, including head coach Glen McNabb’s phone number and email address.

While Ryder Anthony is still at BU, he tore the ACL, LCL and meniscus in his right knee during the final week of futsal training last march. The 2021 Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference all-conference keeper is expected to undergo surgery in September and miss the 2022-23 campaign.

McNabb told the Sun he has a replacement lined up in Brazilian Matheus Souza, who BU hasn’t officially announced as he has yet to receive a student visa.

The 2021 coach of the year has high hopes for the import but opens camp next Wednesday and has pre-season matches in which he’d like to avoid using another player between the pipes.

“Obviously want to have two goalkeepers and the plan is to still have a good, quality goalkeeper,” McNabb said. “We’ve got some pre-season, he’s not here yet … and of course a backup goalie or potentially somebody to fight for the number one spot is good.”

Brandon certainly relied on Anthony in 2021, going 9-2-1 but seldom blowing teams out besides Assiniboine Community College. It also loses Diego Rodriguez, the league and final four MVP who racked up nine regular-season goals and two more in a 4-0 final victory over Canadian Mennonite University.

The best defence might be a good offence in the 12-game campaign that starts on Sept. 10. Golden boot winner Camilo Rodriguez (14 goals) is arguably the most dangerous scorer in the five-team league and no longer has to share free kicks and penalty kicks with his big brother.

The Bobcats will stay tough to bet against for a while.

“We’re pretty excited about defending our title. Most of the guys that are eligible to come back are coming back so we’ll have a good core,” McNabb said.

“They’ve been working hard all summer to stay in shape so we’re hoping to hit the ground running on Wednesday.”

FREE KICKS: In other Bobcat news, the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades announced third-year men’s basketball guard Hans Befus has transferred to the school in Abbotsford, B.C.

“Gonna miss Brandon, especially the people there,” Befus said via text message. “Honestly just wanted to put myself in a situation where I give myself the best chance to do some of the things I know I can do.”

Brandon and UFV don’t meet this season as the Bobcats play the Alberta and British Columbia squads every other year.
