It was a tough finish to round-robin play for the Westman Magic at the under-17 AAA softball national championship in Montreal Friday.
A 7-0 shutout loss to the Cloverdale Fury of British Columbia and a 6-3 defeat to the Fraser Valley Fusion dropped the Magic’s record to 2-3 and placed them third overall in their group.
The Magic held a 3-1 lead over the Fusion after the top of the fifth inning, but the team from British Columbia raced out in front with five runs in the bottom of the frame.
Cassidy Dundas led the way at the plate for the Magic with a pair of hits, while Jessie Henry, Kylan Solomon and Natalie Draper all drove in a run.
Danika Nell struck out three batters in 4 1/3 innings of work. Whitney Rozdeba finished out the contest and recorded two strikeouts.
In the early game, the Magic were down 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning, when the Fury scored five runs to wrap things up early.
Danica Black recorded the only hit of the contest for the Magic, as she hit a double in the fourth frame.
Naomi McKay and Rozdeba combined for two strikeouts on the mound.
The Magic are back in action at 2:45 p.m. today against the Halton Hawks of Ontario.
