WASAGAMING — Nolan Tutkaluk was off Clear Lake Golf Course and home before half the Tamarack field even teed off on Sunday.

He fired a 3-over 75 to fall back to 3 over and had no plans to hit another shot until Tuesday. Whether it was in championship flight or first was out of his hands — so he thought.

Then the possibility of a playoff took shape. He was scoreboard watching and told his family to load up the car. They were either going for dinner at the lake or to watch dad play a few pressure-packed holes.

Sure enough, Ross Sheard bogeyed his final hole after an impressive comeback to even get in the mix. That brought the guys at 3 over inside the top 16. Mark Odut bogeyed four of his last five to make it a five-way playoff for two spots.

Tutkaluk and Jay Thiesen emerged victorious.

“It’s a relief,” Tutkaluk said. “That’s always the goal, get into the top 16 and you never know what can happen during the week.”

Tutkaluk drove the first green and two-putted for birdie on the first, where Sheard drove it long and couldn’t get up and down while Friess narrowly missed a birdie bid.

He then hit his drive on Hole No. 7 left and waited to see Odut find the left trees near the green. Tutkaluk chipped out and nearly jugged his third on the fly, sticking it to tap-in range to secure his spot.

“Seeing Mark hit his into the trees made it a little easier to chip out,” Tutkaluk said. “I figured five would at least give me a fighting chance to get to a third hole and what can you say? You stuffed one, 115 yards and you hit it to a foot, you don’t expect it but a nice way to put the end to it.

“Put the end to a long day and a long weekend.”

Thiesen also went home after his round. The Russell native thought he was out of it but got a call to come back and immediately jumped in the car as well.

The five men teed off after sunset, hardly seeing their balls fly while a sizeable gallery tried to track them. Thiesen made a terrific sand save for birdie on the first and a comfortable par on the second playoff hole to move on.

“It was probably the best golf I played there in the dark,” Thiesen said, “so hopefully I can ride that the rest of the week.”

Their round of 16 begins on Tuesday morning.
