The Virden Oil Capitals’ offence went dry in a pair of games at the T.G. Smith Centre this weekend.

The Steinbach Pistons got a pair of shutouts from 20-year-old Dominik Wasik as they skated to 4-0 and 3-0 wins over the Oil Capitals to take a 2-0 lead in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Turnbull Cup final.

Wasik, who is from Erie, Colo., and has committed to the NCAA’s Air Force Falcons for next season, is the first goaltender to record back-to-back shutouts in the MJHL playoffs since Matthew Thiessen did so for Steinbach in 2018.

Ty Paisley paced the Pistons up front on Sunday with a pair of goals. Kirk Mullen had a goal and an assist each, while Davin Griffin also lit the lamp.

Wasik turned aside 31 shots and Eric Reid made 28 saves in his first start for the Oil Capitals since Game 5 of their semifinal series with the Portage Terriers.

Noah Szabo led the Pistons on offence Saturday with two goals and an assist, while Mullen and Paisley dished out a pair of helpers each.

Griffin and Dawson Milliken also scored for the hosts and Wasik blocked 28 shots.

Owen LaRocque made 27 saves in a losing effort.

The series resumes at Tundra Oil & Gas Place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Game 4 is set for the same time on Thursday in Virden.

Oil Capitals captain Brody Wilson is slated to return to the lineup on Wednesday after serving a two-game suspension as a result of his third checking to the head minor penalty of the season he received in last week’s Game 7 win over the Terriers.

ICINGS: Oak Lake’s Hunter Wallace had a goal and an assist for the Brooks Bandits over the weekend as they split the opening two games of the Alberta Junior Hockey League final with the Spruce Grove Saints. The series resumes Tuesday in Spruce Grove … The Flin Flon Bombers, which featured Cory King of Souris and Reece Richmond of Forrest on its roster and Brandon’s Cole McCaig on its bench, lost the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League final to the Battlefords North Stars in four straight games. The North Stars join the Maritime Hockey League’s Yarmouth Mariners and the host Terriers as teams that have qualified for next month’s Centennial Cup in Portage la Prairie … Swan Valley Stampeders forward Justin Keck, who led the team in playoff scoring with 15 points, has committed to the Briercrest College Clippers in Caronport, Sask. for next season.
