Brandon Wheat Kings forward Nate Danielson is now a prospect of the Detroit Red Wings.

The 18-year-old from Red Deer, Alta., was picked ninth overall on Wednesday during the opening round of the National Hockey League draft in Nashville, Tenn.

He’s the first Wheat King to be picked by Detroit since Robbie Neale in 1973

“It’s really special,” Danielson said to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan shortly after the selection.

“It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little kid to be drafted. To be a part of the Red Wings is super exciting.”

Danielson was a co-captain for the Wheat Kings last season with overage forward Nolan Ritchie. He led the team in scoring with 78 points in 68 games

Wheat Kings netminder and Carberry product Carson Bjarnason was not picked on Wednesday and is expected to be drafted early today when Rounds 2-7 take place.

To the surprise of no one, Regina Pats star forward Connor Bedard was the first overall selection by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Wenatchee Wild forward Zach Benson (Buffalo Sabres), Moose Jaw Warriors forward Brayden Yager (Pittsburgh Penguins), Vancouver Giants forward Samuel Honzek (Calgary Flames) and Saskatoon Blades defenceman Tanner Molendyk (Nashville Predators) were also picked on Wednesday.
