Charlie Elick and Roger McQueen are going to play for Canada at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

The Brandon Wheat Kings teammates were both named to this year’s squad on Wednesday.

This marks the first time that multiple Wheat Kings have been named to Canada’s roster since 2015, when Kale Clague, Tanner Kaspick and Nolan Patrick captured a gold medal.

Elick had 11 points in 56 games during his rookie campaign with the Wheat Kings last season. The 17-year-old defenceman from Calgary also played for Canada White at last year’s World Under-17 Challenge and had two assists in six games.

The 16-year-old McQueen recorded 14 points in 55 games in his freshman Western Hockey League season. The Saskatoon-born forward also played for Canada White as the 2022 World U17’s and had eight points in six contests.

This year’s tournament runs from July 31-Aug. 5 in Trencin, Slovakia and Breclav, Czechia.

Forwards Berkly Catton (Spokane Chiefs), Jordan Gavin (Tri-City Americans), Ryder Ritchie (Prince Albert Raiders), Ollie Josephson (Red Deer Rebels), Carson Wetsch (Calgary Hitmen) and Cayden Lindstrom (Medicine Hat Tigers) will also represent the WHL at the event.
