The Assiniboine Community College Cougars have started their curling program on the right foot, hiring a Manitoba Curling Hall of Famer to coach.
They announced that Brandon’s Maureen Bonar will run their men’s and women’s squads this winter.
Bonar is a past provincial champion at the junior, women’s and senior women’s ranks and won the 2016 world senior women’s title on skip Lois Fowler’s team.
“I’m very excited to give back through coaching the next generation of elite curlers,” Bonar said in a release. “Being part of the curling program at ACC is truly an honour.”
Assiniboine had a strong curling program in the 1980s, winning seven medals at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championships, including two golds.
The Cougars are joining Brandon Curling Club leagues to prepare for a potential CCAA title run. The national championships are on March 12-16 in Fredericton, N.B.
