BOYS

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The first-place Wheat Kings (6-0-0) swept a pair against the 11th-place Pembina Valley Hawks (1-5-1) in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.

On Sunday at Morden’s Access Event Centre, Loughlan McMullan, Owen Wallace, Easton Odut and Ethan Stewart scored as the Wheat Kings earned a 4-1 victory.

Matthew Michta made 24 saves for Brandon, with Ryler Gates blocking 46 shots for Pembina Valley.

On Friday at J&G Homes Arena, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jaxon Hildebrand 13 seconds into the second period, but it was all Brandon from there as Ethan Stanley, Jonah Lemoine, Nash Henwood and Colten Worthington replied in a 4-1 Brandon win. Burke Hood made 26 saves for Brandon, with Bryson Yaschyshyn blocking 45 shots for Pembina Valley.

The Wheat Kings visit Dauphin’s Credit Union Place to meet the Parkland Rangers on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and host the Winnipeg Thrashers at J&G Homes Arena on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

The second-place Cougars (5-1-0) earned a pair of lopsided victories over the 12th-place Kenora Thistles (0-5-1) at the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex.

On Sunday, Micky Gross made 23 saves for Southwest, and Bryan Laing and Nate Robson each scored twice in a 9-0 rout. Kelby Diehl, Ryder Heaphy, Jack Clark, Lynden Gould and Jesse Brown also sniped for the Cougars. Morgan Blackwood and James Hill combined to stop 38 shots for Kenora.

On Saturday, the Cougars exploded for four goals in the final 13 minutes for a 7-3 victory after the Thistles rallied to tie the game early in the third period.

Regan Anderson, Tyson Draper, Gould, Bryan Laing, Sebastian Stone, Diehl and Clark all scored for Southwest.

Evan Svoboda made 30 saves for Southwest, with James Hill turning aside 23 shots for Kenora.

The Cougars have a busy weekend coming as their five-game home stand continues at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex. They host the Norman Northstars on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the Interlake Lightning on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The ninth-place Chiefs (1-2-1) headed into Winnipeg for games against the sixth-place Bruins (3-2-1) and the ninth-place Wild (1-2-1), and lost a pair of heartbreakers.

On Sunday at Hockey For All Centre, Yellowhead forward Bo Tibbatts scored with 41 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime, but Cole Babych had the only goal in the shootout as the Wild won 4-3.

Alec Strachan and Cole Hunter also scored for the Chiefs.

Connor Rapley made 32 saves for Yellowhead, with Dawson Groen blocking 21 shots for the Wild.

On Saturday at Southdale Community Centre, Hunter and Strachan scored goals 32 seconds apart to tie the game 2-2, but the Bruins responded with three goals in the third period, including an empty netter, for a 5-3 victory.

Tibbatts had the other Southwest goal.

Kieran Madill made 34 saves for Yellowhead, with Leyton Medwick blocking 18 shots for Winnipeg.

The Chiefs host the Norman Northstars at the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Thursday at 8 p.m., and visit Morden’s Access Event Centre for games against Pembina Valley on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

The eighth-place Rangers (1-2-2) headed out on the road, ending up a pair of overtime games against against the fourth-place Interlake Lightning (4-2-0) and the Winnipeg Wild.

On Sunday at Teulon-Rockwood Arena, Drew Russell scored with seven seconds remaining in regulation and Brandon Burak sniped 3:01 into overtime to lift Interlake to a 4-3 win over Parkland.

Cash Clarkson, Cam Sarna and Cade Legaarden scored in a two-minute span late in the second period to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

Chase Glover made 29 saves for Parkland, with Alex Myers blocking 35 shots for Interlake.

On Saturday at Hockey For All Centre, Tavyn Boychuk scored his first goal of the season 1:44 into overtime as the Rangers earned a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Wild.

Cam Sarna scored twice in the first period to give Parkland a 2-0 win.

Chase Glover made 28 saves for Parkland, with Jacob Armstrong blocking 21 shots for Winnipeg.

The Rangers have a three-game weekend coming up at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, with Brandon visiting Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the Norman Northstars on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

GIRLS

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The fifth-place Wildcats (2-2-0) earned their first two wins of the season against the seventh-place Central Plains Capitals (0-4-0) and the third-place Pembina Valley Hawks (3-3-0) at Hartney Arena in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

On Sunday, Paige Crossley had a hat trick and an assist and Reese Schutte and Ivy Perkin added singles as the Wildcats edged the Hawks 5-4.

Danica Averill made 38 saves for Westman.

On Saturday, Sydney Sass, Perkin and Schutte all scored in the third period as the Wildcats beat the Capitals 3-0.

Danica Averill made 20 saves for the shutout.

The Wildcats next see action against the Interlake Lightning when they visit the Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The first-place Chiefs (5-1-0) also faced Pembina Valley and Central Plains at the Shoal Lake Communiplex.

On Sunday against the Capitals, Dara Thompson led the Chiefs with a hat trick in a 7-1 rout. Jordyn Veitch, Tara Knight, Kirby Gray and Jordan Woloski also scored after the visitors took a 1-0 lead.

Natalie Rampton earned the win in net.

On Saturday against the Hawks, Mia McGregor scored the lone goal and Natalie Rampton made 26 saves for a 1-0 victory.

Kasia Rakowski made 35 saves for Pembina Valley.

The Chiefs have next weekend off but host Westman on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m., and the Eastman Selects on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m.
