The Brandon Wheat Kings made a swap of 18-year-old forwards on Monday evening, sending Tony Wilson to the Regina Pats for Mattheo Michels.

The five-foot-11, 170-pound forward from Colleyville, Texas, was Regina’s top pick in the Western Hockey League’s 2020 U.S. Priority Draft. He has five goals and six assists in 20 games this season, and has 23 points in 115 WHL games.

Brandon head coach and general manager Marty Murray said Michels skates really well.

“The first thing that jumps out is his pace,” Murray said. “We want to play fast and Mattheo is a player who gets up and down really well. He’s very versatile and can play in a lot of different situations, and I think he complements whoever he plays with.”

Wilson, a Swift Current product who asked for a trade from the Victoria Royals a year ago, was originally acquired by Brandon on Nov. 24, 2022 when he and defenceman Luke Shipley were acquired by the Wheat Kings for Trembecky, a third-round pick in 2023, a fifth-round pick in 2024 and a fourth-round pick in 2026.

The third-round pick, which originally belonged to the Red Deer Rebels, was acquired in the Tyson Zimmer trade with the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sept. 27, 2022.

“We enjoyed his time in Brandon and wish him the best of luck in Regina,” Murray said.

During his year in Brandon, Wilson had seven goals and 14 assists in 56 games. He has 39 points in 137 career WHL games.
