Having two of the top-five scorers in the annual Victoria Inn high school hockey tournament does not always translate into garnering gold.

Just ask the Vincent Massey Vikings when you look at the team’s offensive output during the four-day, 57-game tournament held the Keystone Centre, with four games played at Rivers on the Friday.

With 15 goals in five games, Vincent Massey Vikings sniper Carter Dittmer won the Victoria Inn high school hockey tournament scoring race with 20 points, three better than Steinbach Sabres forwards Colton Wiebe and Lucas Jolicoeur. (Jules Xavier/The Brandon Sun)

Carter Dittmer scored a tournament-high 15 goals in five games, with 20 points to win the scoring race. His offensive exploits included two power-play goals and three shorthanded markers.

However, his team was playing for fifth place on Sunday as the tournament handed out its medals to the top-three teams in three divisions.

Viking teammate Josh Romanik was fourth in tournament scoring with five goals and 15 points in five games.

A key 4-3 loss to the Sturgeon Heights Huskies thwarted any chances of moving on to the gold medal side of the bracket when Marks Antonijs scored the second of his two goals at 12:30 of the third to end a 3-3 stalemate.

Dittmer had a hat trick for the Vikings in that third contest, his fourth multiple goals games in his team’s five tournament games.

The Vikings played for fifth, facing the St. Paul’s Crusaders in the Victoria Inn division won by the Steinbach Sabers.

The Crusaders scored two shorthanded markers and one on the powerplay en route to a 6-2 victory. St. Paul’s offence was paced by a hat-trick from Chase Thoendel, while Dittmer and Daylan Duncalfe scored for the Vikings.

After losing to the Huskies, Vincent Massey rebounded with a 7-4 triumph over the Miles Mac Collegiate. Again, Dittmer stoked the Vikings offence with another four-goal performance. Romanik, Brady Wiltsy and Ethan Bridges contributed solo efforts.

St. Paul's goaltender Aidan Kuo (30) thwarts a scoring chance by Vincent Massey Vikings forward Nash Stone (9) during third period action Sunday afternoon at Enns Brothers Arena. Defenceman Christopher Hermann (10) comes in late to defend, with the Crusaders prevailing 6-2 in the battle for fifth-place during the four-day Victoria Inn high school hockey tournament.

In Rivers, Dittmer had four goals, while Romanik added two for the Vikings in an 8-2 win over the Beaver Brae Broncos. Single goals went to Hudson Brosseau and Nash Stone.

Finishing the tournament with a 3-2 win-loss record, the Vikings open play with a 6-1 win over the Sanford Sabres. Key to the dominant triumph was three shorthanded goals.

Dittmer had a hat trick, Romanik scored twice, while a single marker went to Landen Dreolini.
