The Brandon Wheat Kings and Kelowna Rockets have played a number of classic games since 1996.

Here’s a recap of some of those games between the two Western Hockey League teams.

2019-20

Kelowna 2, Brandon 1 (SO)

Date: Dec. 10, 2019

BWK goal scorers: Ridly Greig.

Kelowna scorers: Matthew Wedman.

BWK goalie: Jiri Patera.

Kelowna goalie: Roman Basran.

Shots: 34-24 BWK.

PP: BWK 1-3. KEL 1-4.

Attendance: 3,360.

RECAP: Wedman opened the scoring with six seconds left in the first period, and Greig tied it early in the second, with both goals coming on the power play. After the teams combined for three unsuccessful shots in overtime, the game went to a shootout, with Wedman scoring the only goal.

2017-18

Brandon 7, Kelowna 4

Date: Dec. 9, 2017

BWK goal scorers: Ty Lewis (2), Stelio Mattheos, Evan Weinger, Cole Reinhardt, Linden McCorrister, Tanner Kaspick.

Kelowna scorers: Ted Brennan, Nolan Foote, Dillon Dube, Kole Lind.

BWK goalie: Logan Thompson.

Kelowna goalie: James Porter Jr., Roman Basran.

Shots: 40-26 KEL.

PP: BWK 2-4. KEL 2-3.

Attendance: 4,008.

RECAP: Mattheos opened the scoring 31 seconds in, but the game was 2-2 after the first period. When Dube sniped 9:40 into the second to give the Rockets their first lead, Brandon responded with three goals in just over six minutes. On top of that, Thompson made 36 saves and was named second star.

2015-16

Brandon 5, Kelowna 1

Date: Dec. 12, 2015

BWK goal scorers: Tyler Coulter, Tanner Kaspick, Garrett Armour, Connor Gutenberg, Ty Lewis.

Kelowna scorers: Lucas Johansen.

BWK goalie: Jordan Papirny.

Kelowna goalie: Jackson Whistle, Michael Herringer.

Shots: 41-36 BWK.

PP: BWK 2-7. KEL 0-6.

Attendance: 4,785.

RECAP: Coulter scored 7:30 into the first period to bring the teddy bears flying down onto the ice, and Brandon took a commanding 5-0 lead in the first half of the game. Johansen broke Papirny’s shutout bid with a shorthanded goal 11:56 into the third period.

2013-14

Kelowna 6, Brandon 5 (OT)

Date: Dec. 13, 2013

BWK goal scorers: Peter Quenneville (2), Rene Hunter, Colton Waltz, Tyler Coulter.

Kelowna scorers: Myles Bell (2), Rourke Chartier, Kris Schmidli, Zach Franko, Ryan Olsen.

BWK goalie: Jordan Papirny.

Kelowna goalie: Jackson Whistle.

Shots: 33-31 KEL.

PP: BWK 1-3. KEL 2-3.

Attendance: 4,218.

RECAP: Hunter brought the teddy bears down 29 seconds into the game and Quenneville’s second goal 17:40 into the third period put Brandon up 5-3. Kelowna pulled the goalie and Bell scored with 38 seconds remaining, and then Bell tied the game with nine seconds left in regulation. He then scored 2:52 into overtime to give the visitors an incredible comeback victory.

2011-12

Brandon 5, Kelowna 3

Date: Dec. 13, 2011

BWK goal scorers: Darian Dziurzynski (2), Dominick Favreau, Alessio Bertaggia, Jason Swyripa

Kelowna scorers: Colton Sissons (2), Carter Rigby.

BWK goalie: Brandon Anderson.

Kelowna goalie: Adam Brown.

Shots: 40-40.

PP: BWK 0-2. KEL 0-5.

Attendance: 4,451.

RECAP: Sissons tied the game 1-1 with eight seconds remaining in the first period, but Brandon scored three times in under 12 minutes in the second period en route to the victory. The back breaker for Kelowna was Dziurzynski’s second goal, a shorthanded marker 12:19 into the third period that made it 5-2.

2009-10

Date: Dec. 11, 2009

BWK goal scorers: Jay Fehr (4), Jesse Sinatynski, Michael Ferland, Mark Schneider, Scott Glennie.

Kelowna scorers: Max Adolph, Brett Bulmer, Spencer Main, Shane McColgan.

BWK goalie: Jacob De Serres.

Kelowna goalie: Mark Guggenberger, Adam Brown.

Shots: 30-30.

PP: BWK 0-3. KEL 2-6.

Attendance: 4,730.

RECAP: Sinatynski scored the teddy-bear goal exactly six minutes into the first period with Kelowna already holding a 2-0 lead. The teams traded goals 18 seconds apart and Fehr tied it 3-3 late in the first period. When Shane McColgan made it 5-4 with nearly seven minutes remaining, Fehr answered 22 seconds later and then added two more goals in the next four minutes.

2007-08

Kelowna 5, Brandon 4

Date: Dec. 12, 2007

BWK goal scorers: Nathan Green, Tyler Dittmer, Matt Calvert, Brayden Schenn.

Kelowna scorers: Jamie Benn (2), Colin Long (2), Brady Leavold.

BWK goalie: Joe Caligiuri.

Kelowna goalie: Kristofer Westblom.

Shots: 36-18 BWK.

PP: BWK 1-5. KEL 2-4.

Attendance: 5,902.

RECAP: Kelowna rebounded from three one-goal deficits, and pulled ahead to stay when Leavold and Long scored in the third period. Schenn’s goal came with 4:51 remaining but Brandon was unable to complete the comeback. Long also had three assists for a five-point night.

2005-06

Kelowna 4, Brandon 3 (OT)

Date: Oct. 8, 2005

BWK goal scorers: Derek LeBlanc, John Wikner, Teegan Moore.

Kelowna scorers: Mike Card (2), Troy Ofukany, Clayton Bauer.

BWK goalie: Tyler Plante.

Kelowna goalie: Kristofer Westblom.

Shots: 36-20 KEL.

PP: BWK 0-6. KEL 3-7.

Attendance: 2,523.

RECAP: The teams went into the third period tied 2-2, with Bauer giving the Rockets the lead 6:06 into the third. Moore tied the game with 4:38 remaining, sending the game to overtime. Kelowna had both shots in the extra period, with Card’s second goal at the 2:12 mark standing as the winner.

2003-04

Kelowna 5, Brandon 2

Date: Dec. 14, 2003

BWK goal scorers: Tyler Dyck (2)

Kelowna scorers: Justin Keller (2), Cam Paddock, Troy Bodie, Blake Comeau.

BWK goalie: Geoff McIntosh.

Kelowna goalie: Kelly Guard.

Shots: 23-22 KEL.

PP: BWK 1-6. KEL 1-6.

Attendance: 2,530.

RECAP: Dyck singlehandedly gave Brandon a 2-1 lead after Paddock scored 81 seconds into the game, but Keller scored twice to restore the Kelowna lead. The Rockets put the game away with a pair of goals two minutes apart midway through the third period.

2001-02

Brandon 5, Kelowna 4 (OT)

Date: Dec. 15, 2001.

BWK goal scorers: Lance Monych, Ryan Stone, Jordin Tootoo, Ryan Craig, Richard Mueller.

Kelowna scorers: Cam Paddock (3), Richard Kelly.

BWK goalie: Robert McVicar.

Kelowna goalie: Jason Stone. Shots: 28-24 BWK.

PP: BWK 2-5. KEL 2-5.

Attendance: 2,793.

RECAP: After Monych and Stone put Brandon up 2-0, Paddock tied it, with the second goal coming with three seconds left in the first period. Paddock’s last goal came with eight seconds remaining in the game to send it to overtime, where the speedy Mueller scored 21 seconds in. Tootoo had two assists and Rory McDade had three for Kelowna.

2000-01

Kelowna 4, Brandon 0

Kelowna scorers: Jan Fadrny (2), Carsen Germyn, Tyler Mosienko.

BWK goalie: Jamie Hodson.

Kelowna goalie: Jason Stone.

Shots: 35-30 KEL.

PP: BWK 0-5. KEL 1-3.

Attendance: 2,703.

RECAP: Germyn scored the winning goal 15:11 into the second period and the former Wheat Kings forward Fadrny scored twice and had a pair of assists, while the future Wheat Kings defenceman Bart Rushmer had an assist and fought Jordin Tootoo. Germany and Rory McDade also had a pair of helpers each.

1999-2000

Brandon 3, Kelowna 2

Date: Oct. 15, 1999.

BWK goal scorers: Kevin Harris, Aaron Goldade, Jamie Muswagon.

Kelowna scorers: Travis Moen, Kevin Korol.

BWK goalie: Jomar Cruz.

Kelowna goalie: Kevin Swanson.

Shots: 34-18 KEL.

PP: BWK 1-1. KEL 0-4.

Attendance: 3,327.

RECAP: Kelowna took a 2-0 lead 5:23 into the second period, but five minutes later, Brandon scored a pair of goals 64 seconds apart to tie it. The game was decided by the stick of Muswagon, who scored the only winning goal of his 13-game WHL career. Brad Twordik had two assists.

1998-99

Brandon 6, Kelowna 3

Date: Dec. 9, 1998.

BWK goal scorers: Ryan Robson, Brett Girard, Aaron Goldade, Alex Argyriou, Burke Henry, Andrei Lupandin.

Kelowna scorers: Brett McLean (3).

BWK goalie: Jamie Hodson.

Kelowna goalie: Kevin Swanson.

Shots: 40-26 BWK.

PP: BWK 3-5. KEL 1-6.

Attendance: 2,267.

RECAP: With Brandon holding a 3-2 lead, Argyriou scored 57 seconds into the third period and Henry sniped too before the future Wheat Kings forward McLean earned his hat trick. Robson, Goldade and Brad Twordik all had two assists, and the teams combined for 76 penalty minutes.

1997-98

Kelowna 3, Brandon 2

Date: Dec. 7, 1997

BWK goal scorers: Kirby Law (2).

Kelowna scorers: Ryan Wade, Brett McLean, Chad Wilchynski.

BWK goalie: David Haun.

Kelowna goalie: Jordan Watt.

Shots: 44-31 BWK.

PP: BWK 0-8. KEL 2-5.

Attendance: 1,940.

RECAP: The teams traded goals in the first period, with McLean sniping 44 seconds into the second period. After the visitors took a 3-1 lead, Law scored 13:43 into the third period but the Wheat Kings couldn’t get any closer. Brad Twordik assisted both of Law’s goals.

1996-97

Brandon 10, Kelowna 3

Date: Dec. 15, 1996

BWK goal scorers: Stefan Cherneski (3), Dorian Anneck (2), Andrei Lupandin, Justin Kurtz, Cory Cyrenne, Brad Twordik, Bobby Leavins Kelowna scorers: Scott King, Ryan Andres, Jordan Walker.

BWK goalie: Brian Elder.

Kelowna goalie: Kim Dillabaugh, Chris Noble.

Shots: 51-26 BWK/KEL.

PP: BWK 0-2. KEL 1-4.

Attendance: 2,242.

RECAP: Brandon took a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes, and four minutes later the game was tied. The Wheat Kings took control by scoring the next six goals. Anneck also had three assists for a five-point night.
