Yellowhead Chiefs defenceman Erica Miko’s aggressive play and offensive contributions earned the 10th grader U18 AAA Manitoba Female Hockey League player of the week honours.
From Onanole, she was a “menace on the blueline” for her team, which had three big weekend victories. The rookie earned an assist in each of the third-place Chiefs three triumphs, giving her two goals and eight points in 18 league games.
Goalie of the week honours went to Kashia Rikowsk of the sixth-place Pembina Valley Hawks, earned the start in two of three league games.
The 11th grader from Winnipeg was solid between the pipes for the Hawks. She turned away 42 of 43 shots in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Yellowhead Chiefs, then followed that up two days later by stopping 40 of 41 shots against the Winnipeg Avros to lead the team to a 2-1 victory.
Rikowski has seen plenty of pucks this season, with the opposition firing 593 at her in 16 games. Her record is 4-10-1-1.
In other league news, top sniper Stephanie Jacob of the first-place Winnipeg Ice has committed to the NCAA Div. 1 Maine Black Bears for the 2024-25 season. In 17 games, she has a league-best 23 goals and 31 points.
