The Western Hockey League’s trade freeze ended on Wednesday, and it didn’t take long for the action to begin.

With the trade deadline looming on Jan. 10, the Edmonton Oil Kings made a pair of massive splashes.

They sent 19-year-old forward Rilen Kovacevic, 18-year-old import defenceman Vojtech Port and a sixth-round pick in 2024 to the Moose Jaw Warriors in exchange for 17-year-old import forward Andrej Tomasec, a first-round pick in 2025, a conditional second-round pick in 2025 and a third-round pick in 2026.

The Warriors and Saskatoon Blades have been engaged in an arms race this season, with both making multiple deals to strengthen their Eastern Conference teams.

In a second blockbuster, the Oil Kings acquired 18-year-old forward Gracyn Sawchyn, 16-year-old forward Lukas Sawchyn and unsigned 15-year-old defenceman Tracen Ashley from the Seattle Thunderbirds. In exchange, the T-Birds received 19-year-old forward Nathan Pilling, a first-round pick in 2026 that originally belonged to Seattle, a second-round pick in 2024 that originally belonged to Kamloops, a conditional second-round pick in 2027, a third-round pick in 2025 that originally belonged to Moose Jaw, a conditional third-round pick in 2027, a fifth-round pick in 2025 and a seventh-round pick in 2024.

Elsewhere, the Prince George Cougars acquired overage defenceman Chase Pauls from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for a third-round pick in 2024.
