Having your defencemen contribute offensively is a bonus for coaches, who expect their D-men to help stop opposing forwards from scoring.
There are five Manitoba Junior Hockey League defencemen leading their respective teams from the blue-line prior to the Christmas break.
These veteran players, all 2003 and 2004 born, trail the top scorer among D-men from the Niverville Nighthawks.
In 33 games, Kaycee Coyle has nine goals and 33 points. He’s four points up on Anthony Bax of the Dauphin Kings, who has a league-best 11 goals and 29 points in 28 games.
Bax is tied with Steinbach Pistons defenceman Noah Szabo, who has eight goals and 29 points in 31 games.
Sebastian Hamming of the OCN Blizzard is among the top five with two goals and 24 points in 32 games, while Swan Valley Stampeders defender Ashton Fishley is fifth with six goals and 23 points in 32 games.
The top MJHL rookie D-man offensively is James Richard of the Winkler Flyers, who has a goal and 15 points in 27 games.
When it comes to the league’s top-10 snipers, Coyle is the only defenceman among the wingers and centremen, sitting in sixth spot.
