• 60 YEARS AGO — John Finley turned in a standout performance in goal and was beaten only on a penalty shot as Laurels laced the juvenile league-leading Lions 5-1 last night. Bob Young scored two to lead the winners while Ray Hurd, Ed Farrant and Jim Robertson added singles. Jim Boles scored for Lions.
• 50 YEARS AGO — The Polish national hockey team used four unanswered goals in the final 10 minutes of last night’s game as a springboard to their lop-sided victory of 9-3 over the SouthWest Hockey League all-star in a game that thrilled the audience in the Deloraine arena. Lyle Franklin, Don Martin and John Dell scored for the All-Stars who were out- shot 43-25.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Tracy Pilling scored the only goal and Carol Grant recorded the shutout as Souris blanked Blazers 1-0 in a Brandon Women’s Broomball League game at Shilo.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Feser’s Lasers claimed top honours at the Brandon and area team squash championship. The Lasers, comprised of Jim Feser, Gavin Roche, Turk Broda, Narnell Nicol, Dan Hamilton, Ken Kukurudz, Neil Fraser, Yvonne Toh and Laurie Anderson, edged McGilla’s Gorillas 17-12 in the total-point event.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Former Brandon Wheat Kings goaltender Rob McVicar recorded his first-ever American Hockey League victory, backstopping the Manitoba Moose to a 3-2 win over the Rochester Americans.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Michael Fortin scored twice, and Carter Cowlthorp had a goal and two assists as the Southwest Cougars nipped the NorMan Northstars 5-4 in a Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League game in Deloraine.
