IN LOCAL HISTORY

• 60 YEARS AGO — Dan Hyrich, Belmont’s curling whiz skipping a Baldur rink composed of Lloyd Gordon, Burton Bray and Leo Stephanson, captured grand aggregate honours and the club’s first major competition in the annual South-Central Bonspiel in Cartwright.

• 50 YEARS AGO — Murray Ham’s Brandon quartet of third Dave Taylor, second Tommy Nesbitt and lead Raymond Townsend, captured the main Brandon Frozen Foods and Meat Market event in the veteran’s portion of the 83rd Annual Brandon Men’s Bonspiel.

• 40 YEARS AGO — Susan Scheel scored 24 points to pace the Earl Oxford Trojans to a 53-23 victory over the Harrison Hawks in the Brandon Junior High School Basketball League pre-season tournament. Meanwhile, Vincent Massey Vikings took the boys’ title with an 89-38 triumph over the Hawks. Phil Penner tossed in 16 points for the winners.

• 30 YEARS AGO — Brandon’s Melissa Habok finished first in the women’s triple jump at the NorthWest Open track meet at the University of Minnesota. Habok recorded a leap of 11.88 metres.

• 20 YEARS AGO — Tasha Hunter and Jocelyn Foreman, the three-time high school provincial champs from Brandon, added another title to their already impressive curling resumes by beating Valour Road’s top-ranked Cherie-Ann Loder 5-4 in an extra end to capture the 2004 Target Provincial Junior Women’s Championship on Monday night at the Swan River Curling Club.

• 10 YEARS AGO — Duncan Campbell scored five goals and set up another on Sunday as the Brandon Wheat Kings completed their Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League weekend sweep of the PembinaValley Hawks with a 10-3 victory.
