Manitoba won its first-ever medal in female play at the Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships on Saturday when Shaela Hayward’s Carman Curling Club rink beat Québec’s Jolianne Fortin to take gold at the RA Centre in Ottawa.

The rookie team, which was rounded out by vice-skip Keira Krahn, second India Young, lead Rylie Cox and coach Diane Hayward beat Fortin of Saguenay 8-5 in the final.

Manitoba went 8-2, including four consecutive playoff wins.

In the men’s event, Newfoundland & Labrador’s rink of skip Simon Perry, third Nicholas Codner, second/vice-skip Brayden Snow, lead Carter Holden and coach Glenn Goss from the St. John’s Curling Club beat Saskatchewan’s Dylan Derksen of Martensville 5-4 to win gold.

Perry, who represented Canada in mixed doubles at the 2024 Youth Olympics at Gangwon, South Korea and just missed the playoffs, was the first medal winner from Newfoundland & Labrador since the event began in 2017.
