• 60 YEARS AGO — Lad Hutchinson of Boissevain was dethroned after two seasons as SouthWest Hockey League scoring champion. Hutchinson finished behind Decker’s young Elgin Knight, who put on a late charge to finish with 36 points in 14 games, four ahead of Hutchinson.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Neepawa captured the eighth annual Reston Invitational Midget Hockey Tournament title with a 5-2 win over Elm Creek. Kerry Thorkleson, with two goals, Steve Dowhan, Murray Menzies and Murray Pearson scored for Neepawa.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Kerry Kunka’s Rivers rink of third Kim Robins, second Darwyn Hamond and lead Bev Gerard defeated Ronald Bodin’s Hartney rink to win the mixed curling event at the Westman Winter Games.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Steve Cole scored three goals to lead the Brandon Stingers to a 15-9 romp over the Ste. Rose Royals in a Manitoba Junior B Hockey League game. Jason Glutek, Derek Gilbert and Derek Gross each added two goals for Brandon. Scott Rouire, Tyler Henry, Kirk Keddie, Corey Bjornson, Dave Paddock and Jeff Moggach added singles.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Brandon’s Tasha Hunter and her Manitoba rink took out some frustration on Ladene Shaw of the Yukon at the Canadian Junior Women’s Curling Championship. Manitoba thrashed the Yukon 9-2 to raise its record to 4-6 after being eliminated from playoff contention earlier in the day with a 7-4 loss to Kristen Recksiedler of British Columbia.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The Yellowhead Chiefs survived a scare in Shoal Lake, blowing a three-goal lead in the final 2:39 of the third period before beating the Interlake Lightning 5-4 in overtime to advance to the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League playoffs. Ashton Anderson scored 6:21 into OT as Yellowhead won the one-game tiebreaker for eighth place.
