• 60 YEARS AGO — Mrs. Ross Fraser of Hamiota captured the Grand Aggregate for the second year running and the Challenge event in the Oak River ladies’ bonspiel, which concluded this week.

• 50 YEARS AGO — John Dell scored three goals and added three assists for the host Souris Elks in a convincing 11-3 win over the Boissevain Border Kings.

• 40 YEARS AGO — Janet Lumsden, who has scored more points than any other woman in Brandon University basketball history, hit two free throws with three seconds remaining to give the Bobcats a 67-65 playoff victory over Lakehead Nor’Westers.

• 30 YEARS AGO — Jarrod Franklin and David Mills each scored a pair of goals for the Deloraine Royals as they stormed past the Pierson Bruins 5-1 to gain a sweep of their best-of-five South West Hockey League quarter-final series. Ken Schneider also scored for the winners.

• 20 YEARS AGO — Lois Fowler’s Brandon team went 2-0 on the opening day of the Scott Tournament of Hearts national women’s curling championship, beating Stacey Stabel of the Northwest Territories 8-3 and Sherry Anderson of Saskatchewan 6-4. Nova Scotia is tied for first place in the round robin with Manitoba at 2-0.

• 10 YEARS AGO — Brandon University Bobcats men’s volleyball team middle Dan Boutwell of Kenora, Ont., was named a second-team Canada West conference all-star.
