• 60 YEARS AGO — Youth beat experience for the aggregate and MacArthur major events honours in Brandon’s 73rd annual men’s bonspiel last night. The Brandon Club’s Ivan Carlisle, 27, with his brothers John, 24, and Mickey, 21, and Mel Logan, 21, won the laurels with a 9-4 triumph over veteran Roy Cuthill of Welwyn.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Rinks skipped by Shirley Payne of Brandon University and Doug Smith of Lakehead University were the only competitors to sport perfect records following yesterday’s opening play in the Great-Plains Athletic Conference Curling Championships.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Brandon rinks were one for two in the opening round of the Manitoba senior men’s curling championship in Winnipeg. Gerry MacKay and his Brandon rink of third Mert Bray, second Bill Adams and lead Fred Trottier came up winners, dumping Altona’s Don Friesen 7-5. Brandon’s Dick Jones, with third Gerald Harper, second Don Ready and lead Lorne Preston dropped a 6-4 decision to Doug Edmundson of Portage.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Tim Friesen stepped up in a big way with a game-high 27 point performance to spark the Killarney Raiders to a 64-56 triumph facing the Crocus Plainsmen in junior varsity boys action in the Westman High School Basketball League.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Zach McMillan scored once and set up two others to lead the Crocus Plainsmen to a 3-2 victory over the Neepawa Tigers in Westman High School Hockey League playoff action.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Ryan Pulock was the Brandon Wheat Kings’ milestone man as the 19-year-old captain tied the Wheat Kings’ all-time goal-scoring mark for a defenceman and reached 200 career points as Brandon broke out of its eight-game losing streak with a wild 7-4 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors at Westman Place.
