60 YEARS AGOBill Blair and his rink comprised of Wayne Nickle, Karen Gillespie and Lorraine Thompson sailed through the Elton Collegiate Bonspiel at the Brandon Curling Club with five straight wins to sweep top honors in the challenge event.

50 YEARS AGO — The Rivers A senior hockey team won the NorthCentral Hockey League trophy in Rivers by defeating the McAuley Tigers of the western division 5-4. Merv Exner counted a goal and two assists, working well with linemate Don McFazden who picked up two goals. Also scoring for the victors was Gil Vermette and Bob Clark.

40 YEARS AGO — What was considered the stingiest defence in the Western Hockey League was left in shattered ruins last night at the Virden arena before 2,605 fans when the Lethbridge Broncos fell 10-2 at the hands of the Brandon Wheat Kings, ending the best-of-seven Eastern Division prelimi- nary series in five games.

30 YEARS AGORob Smith scored twice to pace the Cartwright Clippers to a 3-2 victory over the Elkhorn Canadians in a South West Hockey League playoff game. Brett Vincent also scored for Cartwright.

20 YEARS AGO — It took the Brandon Wheat Kings all of 2:23 to give Josh Harding the lead he would need to fashion a first-round playoff upset. Harding stopped 28 shots to help the Wheat Kings earn a 4-1 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders to clinch their best-of-seven Western Hockey League Eastern Conference quarter-final series 4-2 in front of a crowd of 7,042 at the Winnipeg Arena.

10 YEARS AGO — Brandonite Isabela Onyshko won a bronze medal at the seventh annual International Federation of Gymnastics World Challenge Cup in Qatar.
