IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 60 YEARS AGO — Winnipeg dominated the 27th annual 10-pin bowling tournament this weekend, however, Shirley Bukaluk and Cam McPherson of Brandon teamed up to collar the mixed doubles competition with an 1,177 total.
• 50 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Wheat Kings Hockey Club was purchased by local businessman Bruce Kent. Formerly one of four shareholders of the team, Kent purchased shares formerly held by fellow Brandonites Glen Lawson, Keith McCullum and Rudy Pilous.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Dave Pilon is $600 richer following the 1984 handicap singles tournament. His 1,078 total in the exciting final was only six pins more than runner-up Cam Boon of Winnipeg.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Brandon netminder Byron Penstock made 31 saves as the Wheat Kings downed the Lethbridge Hurricanes 7-5 in a WHL playoff triumph. Scoring for the Wheat Kings were Mike Maneluk with three, Chris Johnston with two, and Darren Ritchie and Mark Kolesar with one each.
• 20 YEARS AGO — The Medicine Hat Tigers pounced for two goals in the first five minutes and never looked back on their way to a series-clinching 4-1 triumph facing the Wheat Kings last night in front of another raucous soldout crowd of 4,006 at The Arena.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Brady Perreault has never set high goals for himself playing hockey. He’s mainly out on the ice to have fun, which explains his sportsmanlike behaviour. But that doesn’t mean the 14-year-old Brandonite isn’t driven to succeed, and it paid off when he was named the Ken Klassen Memorial Award for hardest working player in a Hockey Brandon house league at the organization’s awards banquet.
