The word “gracious” wasn’t in the vocabulary of the host Brandon Volleyball Club in their 17-and-under tournament on Saturday.

The BVC boys dropped just one set in pool play and swept through the playoffs, smoking 204 Cardinal 25-11, 25-17 in the final at the Healthy Living Centre.

“Honestly, I thought that was some of our best volleyball we’ve played this season,” said head coach Grant Wilson. “The kids worked hard and showed really good progress with some of the things we’re trying to get better at.

“We controlled [the final] pretty well. Our serving was much better, our passing was very solid and our overall intensity and focus were probably as good as they’ve been. We were dialled in and the kids played really well.”

While the top club teams in the province are typically 204, Winman and Junior Bisons, in some order, this Brandon squad is absolutely a favourite to hit the podium at provincials in Winnipeg on May 10-12.

The core group has been with the program for a while, with a few pieces added along the way to essentially include most of the top Grade 11 students in the area.

Outside hitters Ethan Baraniuk and Kal-El Wilson and libero Kingston Thomas stand out at their positions, but the lineup is strong across the board.

Wilson stresses how important depth is to the team’s success.

“[Saturday] was a long day with the three 17U matches followed by the four 18U matches, so it was an absolute grind,” Wilson said after the guys lost an 18U quarterfinal on Sunday.

“We needed everybody to help get us through that, and overall really pleased with how it went.”

The team heads to nationals in Edmonton on the last weekend of May.

The BVC 18U squad also fell in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
