It was a good thing the Wawanesa Brewers pushed their home opener back a night with Friday’s unexpected snowfall putting a damper on scheduled games in the South West Baseball League.

However, the visiting and defending SWBL champion Boissevain Centennials were not feeling generous on the diamond en route to a 6-4 road victory.

It was a pitcher’s battle most of the way, with the Brewers taking a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning before the Centennials found their bats and erased that lead to take a 4-2 lead.

An inning later, Boissevain added two more runs, and held off a late rally following a solo homer by Brewers third baseman Avery Kirkup off reliever Drew Hilhorst.

He had come on in relief of Skylar Canada, who earned the win after he had previously replaced Boissevain starter Dawson Hole.

On the Wawanesa mound, former Boissevain player Chris Hendrickson went the distance for the Brewers, earning the loss despite a solid debut outing.

Told he would see less playing time in Boissevain this season, Hendrickson said he joined Wawanesa as he can still contribute on the mound and at the plate.

Despite the winter rust, both teams demonstrated solid play on both sides of the ball — turning double plays, base stealing and clutch hitting with runners in scoring position.

A great turnout for the best manicured diamond in the SWBL, as fans ringed the diamond with their lawn chairs, or found a seat in the bleachers below the press box.

For those arriving for the opening pitch at 7 p.m., the nearby concession provided baseball fans with burgers and hotdogs off the barbecue.

With baseballs costing $9 each, the Brewers reimburse youngsters scurrying about the diamond chasing foul balls and returning them to the Wawanesa dugout with a quarter. Four quarters buys a giant Mr. Freeze from the concession.

Wawanesa’s roster this season features a number of sibling combinations: Rylan and Dylan Brown; Avery and Dawson Cullen; Kai and Derek McGregor; plus Kain, Cody and Grady Shearer.

In the opposite dugout, besides the veterans there are a new crop of players who are currently playing for the Boissevain Broncos now in the lineup: Griffin Albrecht, Connor Martin, Tyler Robertson and Brett Laing.

Three of those younger players — Albrecht, Martin, Robertson — are off to play baseball at three different North Dakota post-secondary institutes this fall.

The Centennials also feature sibling on the roster: Austin and Tanner Clyne; Jordan and Dallas Foote; and Jay and Tyson Pringle.
