Shilo Country Club’s Zostrianos Gross and Addison Kartusch with Team Manitoba/St. Charles Country Club sit atop of their respective leaderboards at Niakwa Country Club following the opening round of the junior boys and girls championship.

Gross made two eagles and two birdies to spark a 3-under par 69, giving him a three stroke lead on Terence Rafferty from Team Manitoba/Southwood Golf and Country Club.

Ty Brewster from Team Manitoba/Quarry Oaks Golf Course and Ryder Pufuhl from Team Manitoba/Rossmere Country Club share the lead in the 15-16 age group following 2-over par 74s.

In the boys’ 13-14 age group, Hunter Oakden from Team Manitoba/Glendale Golf and Country Club (GGCC) shot a 5-over 77, two strokes better than Ryder St. Laurent from Team Manitoba/Niakwa.

In the junior girls’ championship, Kartusch set a personal best record with eight birdies on the scorecard on her way to a 2-under par 70. She is one of 12 girls’ aged 13 to 18.

Jeri Lafleche from Niakwa sits in second place following a 3-over par 75.

Niawka’s Jewel Lafleche leads the girls’ 13-14 age group by 17 strokes over Wheat City Golf Course’s Payton Bailey, who shot a 22-over 94.

B.C.’s Kailie Matthews from the Kelowna Golf & Country Club is the lone competitor in the girls’ 15-16 age group. She opened with a 97.

In the boys’ 13-14 age group, the following local golfers reported the following scores on opening day: 1st Hunter Oakden (GGCC) 5-over 77; T7th Aris Mercury (GGCC) 18-over 90; 10th Carson Chapman (GGCC) 10 23-over 95.

In the boys’ 15-16 age group, the following local golfers reported the following scores on opening day: T8th Gavin Carver (GGCC) 9-over 81; 14th Ben Sparling (GGCC) 13-over 85; 16th Noah Jensen (SCC) 16-over 88; T17th Emmerson Kollinger (GGCC) 17-over 80; 20th Oliver Kearns (GGCC) 20-over 95.

In the boys’ 17-18 age group, the following local golfers reported the following scores on opening day: 1st Zostrianos Gross (SCC) 3-under 69; 4th Spence Mott (SCC) 2-over 74; T5th Hayden Delaloye (Neepawa Golf and Country Club) 3-over 75; 29th Lucas Jensen (SCC) 28-over 100.

Action resumes today with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. for the girls, while the boys head out for the first group at 8:12 a.m.
