• 60 YEARS AGO — Transcona Atomics captured the provincial senior baseball crown in Winnipeg when they split a twin-bill against Hamiota Red Sox.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Three members of the Brandon University Bobcats hockey team were invited to the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletics Union all-star training camp: Larry Budzinksi, Brian Boyle and Perry Robinson.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Ron Popplestone raced home with the only run in the third inning when a pitch by Rich Gregoire got past Active catcher Greg Creaser as UCT defeated Active Muffler 1-0 to capture the best-of-five Brandon Commercial Fastball League championship series 3-1.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Gary Magwood pitched a complete-game three-hitter and Marvin Magwood stroked a game-winning double in the 10th inning to lead Sanders to a 3-1 win over Clanwilliam for a spot in the Brandon Commercial Fastball League final.
• 20 YEARS AGO — John Houlihan struck out 13 batters en route to a complete- game victory Wednesday night at Westbran Stadium as the Houstons Hitmen beat the Rally Caps Cubs 4-2 in the deciding game of a MacArthur’s Senior AA Baseball League semifinal series. The Hitmen, four-time defending champions, won the six-point series 7-5 and will open a best-of-five final at Westbran against the Simplot Sox.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Six Brandon Wheat Kings head off to NHL training camps this week. Centre John Quenneville (New Jersey Devils), right-winger Jayce Hawryluk (Florida Panthers), left-winger Richard Nejezchleb (New York Rangers), right-winger Peter Quenneville (Columbus Blue Jackets) and defenceman Eric Roy (Calgary Flames) — all drafted players — and free agent goaltender Jordan Papirny (Montreal Canadiens) will attend NHL camps.
