The Vincent Massey Vikings exacted some revenge and were rewarded with the Winnipeg High School Football League junior varsity nine-man provincial title Thursday night in Winnipeg.

The team was without its two primary quarterbacks but that didn’t make much difference as the offence fired all night at Princess Auto Stadium, routing the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes 40-16.

Leighton Lefebvre had the game of his life, filling in at quarterback as Charlie Gauthier and Haiden Samuels were out due to injuries. The Grade 10 pivot had three rushing touchdowns and ran an effective offence all night.

Lefebvre was named the game’s most valuable player.

“We’re all very excited. I was super nervous at the start of the game but all my nerves went away after my first big run,” Lefebvre said via phone minutes after the championship banner was awarded.

The Buckeyes were the only team to beat the Vikings in the regular season.

The teams were tied 14-14 at the half and Massey’s first play of the third quarter was a long interception by Lefebvre, but he was quick to block that out and move on to the next possession.

“It’s just football. If a play goes bad just forget about it and focus on the next one. So yeah if feels really good. The O-lineman stepped up and everyone played a great game,” he said.

Head coach Gavin Young was quick to praise Lefebvre’s effort.

“He’s a special athlete. We believed in him. He was nervous a bit but once he settled in and started to find a zone, man he sure looked good out there,” said Young.

While Lefebvre shone Young was most proud of the fact that all 35 players on the roster had a hand in the championship and every player that dressed saw multiple snaps in the game.

“Everybody is ecstatic. We’re almost overwhelmed with joy and happiness. We’ve been a team all year and these kids are walking the halls together and friends, and to have the season this way is great,” Young added.

Thomas Seitz opened the scoring in the first quarter by punching in run on the ground.

Miles Mac answered back on a long run, but Lefebvre scored on a massive run just a few plays later to make it 14-6 midway through the second.

Alex Haywood answered back for Miles Mac late in the second quarter and converted the 2-point attempt to enter the half tied.

Lefebvre’s interception early in the third was the only mistake in the second half, as he played like a man possessed from then on, busting out multiple big gains on the ground to secure the title.

Ethan Smith and Leaf Klassen also found the end zone for the Vikings.
