A recent Canada West women’s basketball champion against a winless team. The kind of game that contrary to a popular saying, you can play on paper.

Alberta Pandas 80, Brandon Bobcats 33 read the Healthy Living Centre scoreboard on Saturday.

“We knew coming into this they were going to be a challenging team and they have a lot of talent,” said Bobcats rookie forward Renee Dauphinais.

“We just came in, we were told to compete and work our hardest.”

The Pandas (4-2) shot it better — 42 per cent to 19 — won the rebound battle 54-30 and limited their turnovers to 16 while forcing 25.

Their quick and athletic yet tall and physical forwards made it tough for Brandon (0-8) to do what it does best.

“For us it’s pushing the ball, getting ahead, that’s what’s working for us. When we play with pace, that’s what brings good outcomes,” Dauphinais said.

“But when we slow it down, our poor communication ends up losing it for us on offence.

“Quick rebound or take it out quick, when we see those advantages we have to take it right away because especially playing a team like that, we don’t get many shots with easy chances to score so we have to take advantage of those moments.”

The game took an immediate turn in the opening minutes when two-time defensive player of the year Claire Signatovich went out with an index finger injury.

It appeared dislocated and lacerated as the Winnipeg native immediately headed to the stands and left the HLC with her parents for X-rays.

Alberta still had more than enough options on the other end to get in the paint and score at will, opening up a 21-9 lead through 10 minutes.

Brandon tightened up defensively in the second quarter, but so did the lid on the rim on the other end. The Bobcats didn’t hit a shot for the first six minutes of the frame before Piper Ingalls swished a deep three.

She was the only one to hit multiple field goals for BU in the half while Jayden Tanner led Alberta to a 37-16 edge at the break.

Alberta’s top scorer Annacy Palmer went off for nine points in the third quarter while Brandon still struggled to find open looks and make them. The Pandas made it 62-29 entering the fourth.

Jayna Maytwayashing was the only Bobcat to score in the final quarter, with a pair of close-range shots in the team’s worst quarter of the game.

Ingalls led BU with 10 points while Palmer had a game-high 17.

The Bobcats close the semester in Edmonton this weekend against the also-winless MacEwan Griffins, who they split for their lone win of the 2023-24 season.

“We’re excited to get back to practice on Monday and get working towards MacEwan,” Dauphinais said. “We know it’s going to be a competitive game and a great weekend of basketball so we’re really excited to get back on the court.”

FREE THROWS: McLeod took part in the morning shoot around but was inactive for the third straight game due to undisclosed reasons … Bobcats coach Ilarion Bonhomme declined to comment after the game.
