BOYS

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The first-place Wheat Kings (19-4-2) earned three points in three Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League games last week

On Sunday at J&G Homes Arena, Cody Farrell scored into an empty net as the fourth-place Winnipeg Wild (16-4-2) blanked the Wheat Kings 3-0.

Brady Low made 24 saves for Brandon, with Justin Perreault blocking 35 shots for Winnipeg.

On Saturday at J&G Homes Arena, Ethan Stanley, Hudson Champagne, Reid Nicol and Jonah Lemoine scored for Brandon, but Lucas Laramee of the sixth-place Eastman Selects (12-9-3) sent the game to overtime tied 4-4.

After the Selects had all three shots in overtime but failed to score, they converted on all three shots in the shootout for a 5-4 victory.

Matthew Michta made 23 saves for Brandon, with Wyatt Minsky blocking 29 shots for Eastman.

On Tuesday at Shoal Lake Communiplex, Cole Dupuis had a hat trick and Jaxson Brick, Crew Elder and Reid Nicol each scored twice in a 9-4 victory.

Konnor Klemick actually gave the Chiefs an early lead, and Destin Knight, Nolan Kozak and Winston Lepp also scored for the hosts. Brady Low made 14 saves for Brandon, with Connor Rapley and Cole Lelond combining to turn aside 36 shots for Yellowhead.

The Wheat Kings head out on the road next week, visiting the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex to play Southwest on Wednesday at 8 p.m., Beausejour’s Sun Gro Centre to meet the Eastman Selects on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Winnipeg’s Hockey for All Centre to skate against the Wild on Sunday at 2:45 p.m.

In their final game before the Christmas break, they meet the Winnipeg Thrashers at Seven Oaks Community Centre on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m.

SOUTHWEST COUGARS

After a mid-week trip to Dauphin to face Parkland, the second-place Cougars (17-4-4) hosted the seventh-place Pembina Valley Hawks (11-8-3) at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Saturday. The back half of their series set for Souris on Sunday was postponed due to the storm.

On Saturday, Casey Magarrell sent the game to overtime with 98 seconds remaining and Ryder Wolfe scored 44 seconds into overtime as the Hawks earned a 7-6 victory.

Lynden Gould had a hat trick, Connor Hoemsen scored twice and Shane Elder had a single for Southwest. Brodie Cameron made 31 saves for Southwest, with Ryler Gates blocking 20 shots for Pembina Valley.

On Tuesday at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, Micky Gross made 28 saves in a 6-0 Southwest victory. Hoemsen and Elder both scored twice and Spencer Cullen and Bryan Laing added singles. Kyle Pelletier and Piet Mierau stopped 35 shots for Parkland.

After hosting Brandon on Wednesday, the Cougars head to Kenora’s Moncrief Construction Sports Centre to meet the Thistles on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

In their final games before Christmas, they visit the Shoal Lake Communiplex to play Yellowhead on Friday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m., and host the Winnipeg Wild at the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

The 13th-place Chiefs (3-17-1) fell in home games to a pair of the league leaders last week.

After Tuesday’s loss to Brandon, the Wild visited the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Saturday afternoon and handed the hosts a 10-0 thrashing.

Cole Lelond made 45 saves for Yellowhead, with Dawson Groen turning aside 16 shots for the Winnipeg shutout.

Yellowhead hosts Parkland at Shoal Lake Communiplex on Tuesday at 8 p.m., and then heads up to Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena to meet the Norman Northstars on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

In their final pre-Christmas action, Southwest visits Shoal Lake on Friday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m., and the Chiefs travel to meet the Winnipeg Thrashers at Seven Oaks Community Centre on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m.

PARKLAND RANGERS

After Tuesday’s game with Southwest, the eighth-place Rangers (12-12-0) visited the third-place Winnipeg Bruins (18-3-1) at Southdale Community Centre on Saturday.

Brayden Budolowski scored twice for the Rangers but the Bruins led 3-0 and 6-1 in an 8-2 victory. Kyle Pelletier and Piet Mierau combined to make 19 saves for Parkland, with Jackson Hoes blocking 37 shots for Winnipeg.

The Rangers visit the Chiefs in Shoal Lake on Tuesday at 8 p.m., and have a weekend home-and-home with Pembina Valley, hosting on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and visiting Morden’s Access Events Centre on Saturday at 8 p.m.

In their final game before the break, the Rangers host the Central Plains Capitals in Dauphin on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 1:30 p.m.

GIRLS

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS

The seventh-place Wheat Kings (4-6-0) were set to host their two regional rivals at two different arenas on the weekend in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.

Unfortunately, the storm postponed Sunday’s game with Westman that was scheduled for Westoba Place, On Saturday at J&G Homes Arena, Presley Hodson scored twice and Brooklynn Cochrane, Emma Pollock and Grace Kirk also had goals in a 5-0 Yellowhead victory.

Clair Merckx made 18 saves for the shutout, with Shannon Hees and Danica Averill combining to make 36 saves for Brandon.

The Wheat Kings have three games at J&G Homes Arena on the weekend, hosting the Winnipeg Ice on Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Avros on Saturday at 8 p.m., and the Interlake Lightning on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

They have one more full weekend before the Christmas break, visiting the Ice at Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre on Friday, Dec. 20 at 7:15 p.m., meeting the Eastman Selects at the Niverville Recreation Centre on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m., and finishing up at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex against the Interlake Lightning on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2:30 p.m.

The league resumes play on Jan. 3.

YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS

Prior to Saturday’s game in Brandon, the third-place Chiefs (9-8-0) visited Hartney Arena to skate against Westman on Saturday.

On Friday at Hartney Arena, Yellowhead’s Emma Pollock and Westman’s Reese Schutte traded goals in the first period, but Kirby Gray’s marker in the second stood up as the winner and Grace Kirk added an insurance marker in a 3-1 Yellowhead victory.

Clair Merckx made 33 saves for Yellowhead, with Indigo Stone turning aside 25 shots for Westman.

The Chiefs have this week off and finish up the first half of the season with a pair of games at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, against the Pembina Valley Hawks on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m., and against the Winnipeg Avros on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2:30 p.m.

WESTMAN WILDCATS

The fourth-place Wildcats (8-8-1) played the Chiefs on Fridayand had their game against the Wheat Kings on Sunday postponed.

The Wildcats have next weekend off, and finish up the first half of the season with a pair of games at Hartney Arena, against the Winnipeg Avros on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m., and against the Winnipeg Ice on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2 p.m.
