BOYS
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
The first-place Wheat Kings (22-4-2) won three road games last week in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League.
On Sunday at Hockey for All Centre, Jonah Lemoine scored twice and Ethan Stanley and Dustin Bell also sniped as the Wheat Kings earned a 4-1 decision over the fourth-place Winnipeg Wild (18-6-2)
Matthew Michta Low made 20 saves for Brandon, with Justin Perreault blocking 18 shots for Winnipeg.
On Saturday at Beausejour’s Sun Gro Centre, Reid Nicol scored twice and the Wheat Kings received singles from Cole Dupuis, Ethan Stanley, Hudson Champagne, Easten Turko and Jaxson Brick as Brandon built up a 5-0 lead and won 7-1 over the fifth-place Eastman Selects (13-11-3)
Brady Low made 27 saves for Brandon, with Samuel Fontaine and Wyatt Minsky combining to stop 27 shots for Eastman.
On Wednesday at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex, Konner MacKay, Grady Taylor and Ethan Stanley scored as Brandon edged Southwest 3-1.
Shane Elder had the lone goal for Southwest. Matthew Michta made 19 saves for Brandon, with Micky Gross stopping 39 shots for Southwest.
In their final game before the Christmas break, the Wheat Kings meet the Winnipeg Thrashers at Seven Oaks Community Centre on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The second half begins for Brandon when they visit the Parkland Rangers at Dauphin’s Credit Union Centre on Friday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
SOUTHWEST COUGARS
After the loss to Brandon, the third-place Cougars (18-6-4) headed to the Moncrief Construction Sports Centre to meet the 11th-place Kenora Thistles (9-16-0).
On Sunday, Brady Cates made 37 saves as Kenora earned a 4-0 victory. Micky Gross made 26 saves for Southwest.
On Saturday, Lynden Gould had a pair of goals and Slater Anderson and Jaxsten Hansen-Young added singles in a 4-2 Southwest victory. Brodie Cameron made 32 saves for Southwest, with Morgan Blackwood blocking 39 shots for Kenora.
In their final games before Christmas, they visit the Shoal Lake Communiplex to play Yellowhead on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and host the Winnipeg Wild at the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Southwest begins the New Year with a trip to Southdale Community Centre to meet the Winnipeg Bruins on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 4 p.m., and hosts the Parkland Rangers at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 6 p.m.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The 13th-place Chiefs (3-20-1) had a home game against Parkland before heading north to Thompson to meet the 10th-place Norman Northstars (10-19-1) at C.A. Nesbitt Arena.
On Sunday, the Northstars scored three power-play goals on 13 opportunities as they handed the Chiefs a 7-3 loss.
Alec Strachan scored twice and Nolan Kozak added a single for the visitors. Cole Lelond and Connor Rapley combined to make 44 saves for Yellowhead, with Lincoln Richcoon turning aside 35 shots for Norman.
On Saturday, Colby Asselstine, Grady McNish, Alec Strachan, Nolan Kozak and Duncan McLean scored for the Chiefs but they fell 6-5. Connor Rapley made 46 saves for Yellowhead, with Austin Kindrat blocking 21 shots for Norman.
On Tuesday at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, Liam Chartrand had two goals and two assists as the Rangers earned a 6-4 victory. Forrest Karlson, Alex Campbell and Carter Moncrief also scored as Parkland built a 5-0 lead, but Quinten Fisk’s late shorthanded goal was the insurance they needed.
Grady McNish scored twice and Chase Cochrane and Alec Strachan also sniped in Yellowhead’s spirited comeback attempt. Connor Rapley made 43 saves for Yellowhead, with Piet Mierau blocking 34 shots for Parkland.
In their final pre-Christmas action, the Cougars visit Shoal Lake on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the Chiefs travel to meet the Winnipeg Thrashers at Seven Oaks Community Centre on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The New Year begins for the Chiefs with the Thrashers travelling to the Shoal Lake Communiplex for games on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m.
PARKLAND RANGERS
After the win over Yellowhead, the sixth-place Rangers (14-12-0) had a home-and-home series against the ninth-place Pembina Valley Hawks (11-9-4).
On Saturday at Morden’s Access Events Centre, Quinten Fisk and Alex Campbell each scored twice, and Dayson Martin and Landyn Garton added singles as the Rangers rallied from a 4-2 deficit to post a 6-4 victory.
Piet Mierau made 50 saves for Parkland, with Ryler Gates blocking 20 shots for Pembina Valley.
On Friday at Dauphin’s Credit Union Place, Forrest Karlson scored the winner on the power play 5:54 into the third period as the Rangers earned a 4-2 victory. Ryzlie Nepinak, Quinten Fisk and Landyn Garton (into an empty net) had the other Parkland goals.
Piet Mierau made 42 saves for Parkland, with Karsen Dyck turning aside 20 shots for Pembina Valley.
In their final game before the break, the Rangers host the Central Plains Capitals in Dauphin on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Parkland begins 2025 by hosting Brandon on Friday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m., and they visit the Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex to meet Southwest on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 6 p.m.
GIRLS
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
The seventh-place Wheat Kings (4-7-1) were shut out by the third-place Winnipeg Ice (9-4-1) and the first-place Winnipeg Avros (15-0-2) in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA.
On Sunday, the ninth-place Interlake Lightning (2-11-2) postponed their game.
On Saturday, Cali Lavallee scored twice as the Avros blanked the Wheat Kings 5-0. Adriana Almeida stopped 17 shots for the shutout, while Shannon Hees made 41 saves for Brandon.
On Friday, Danica Averill made 46 saves but the Wheat Kings were blanked 8-0. Winnipeg’s Bailey Grunewald only had to make 10 saves for the shutout.
The Wheat Kings have one more full weekend before the Christmas break, visiting the Ice at Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre on Friday at 7:15 p.m., meeting the Eastman Selects at the Niverville Recreation Centre on Saturday at 2 p.m., and finishing up at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex against the Interlake Lightning on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
The league resumes play on Friday, Jan. 3, with Brandon visiting the Interlake Lightning in Warren at 7:30 p.m.
They return to Brandon for the next two days, with games at J&G Homes Arena against the Central Plains Capitals on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m., and the Eastman Selects on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 3:30 p.m.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The fourth-place Chiefs (9-8-0) had theis week off from league play.
Before the Christmas break, they have a pair of games at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, against the Pembina Valley Hawks on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and against the Winnipeg Avros on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
In the New Year, the Chiefs head out on the road for three games, visiting Portage la Prairie’s BDO Centre for the Community to meet Central Plains on Friday, Jan. 3 at 7:45 p.m., the Hockey For All Centre to play the Winnipeg Ice on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 4:45 p.m., and Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex to skate against the Interlake Lightning on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 2:30 p.m.
WESTMAN WILDCATS
The fifth-place Wildcats (8-8-1) had the week off from league play.
They finish up the first half of the season with a pair of games at Hartney Arena, against the Winnipeg Avros on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and against the Winnipeg Ice on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats also come out of the break with a pair of games at Hartney Arena, hosting the Eastman Selects on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m., and the Pembina Valley Hawks on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m.
