While Westman continues to dig out from recent snowfall, ski and snowboard enthusiasts are thrilled to be hitting the slopes.

And local ski hills are thrilled to welcome them.

Asessipi Ski Resort near Russell, Thunderhill near Swan River, and Holiday Mountain Resort near La Rivère opened Friday while Ski Valley near Minnedosa opened Saturday.

First year-owners Jay and Elin Klym welcomed droves of visitors over the weekend with increasing activity thanks in large part to not only recent snowfall but also warmer temperatures.

Jay Klym said his family not only farms in the area, but Ski Valley is a special place to him where he worked as an instructor and lift operator as well.

“Now that the lifts are going around and people are going up and down the hill it feels pretty good,” said Klym on Sunday while taking a few minutes to pause in an otherwise very busy day.

“It was a little nervous leading up to opening weekend but now it’s wearing off now that things are going smoothly.”

The Klyms purchased the ski area from former longtime owners Don Horner and Nancy MacKay, who are staying involved to aid in the transition, which Klym says is a massive benefit to the first-year operators.

“You prepare for curveballs that might come along but you try to prepare for everything. Nobody knows how to make snow or look after a hill like Don and Nancy have. Any questions we have, anything we need, they’ve been helping out with pretty much everything. They’ve been so reassuring and helpful.”

Considering the hill opened more than a month earlier than last year, the season is off to a great start.

“I haven’t had my skis on yet, but it seems to be going well,” Klym added.
