Dale Penner couldn’t think of a better way to spend his last Saturday of 2024.

The idea: An indoor golf tournament to raise money for CancerCare Manitoba. The site: Evo Golf Performance and Social Club.

When Evo owner Austin Dobrescu got the call from his old friend, who grew up in Brandon and recently moved to Calgary, it was an easy decision to stage the 18-hole, par-3 scramble tourney.

“It’s the first time we’ve had the opportunity to do something for the community, for a good cause. We’ve only been around for just over a year so we were due,” Dobrescu said.

“I’m really grateful and happy to be able to facilitate this.”

Starting at 5 p.m., foursomes flooded to the downtown Brandon facility for the next six hours. A total of 68 players on 17 teams competed, and while the team of Nolan Slate, Will Fawcett, Ryden Hargreaves and Evan Nachtigall ended up on top at 13-under par, the more significant number to all was $4,357 — the amount being donated to a cause close to Penner’s heart.

“My dad died of cancer a couple of years back so that’s why we chose CancerCare Manitoba,” Penner said.

“Just bringing together the community to do some good and have fun while doing it is the ultimate goal here.”

As usual when one Westman business stages an event, the community around rallies. Wheat City Golf Course and Minnedosa Golf and Country Club chipped in with prizes, as did Cafe Do Good and ReNu Hygienics. Western Canadian Aerial awarded a 30-minute flight over Brandon for the closest to the pin winner and two friends.

There’s a good chance the year-end fundraiser will become an annual tradition.

“Dale brought this idea to me at the end of November,” Dobrescu said. “Between everything I had going on between leagues and holiday stuff and making different tweaks in the business, I let Dale … and a couple of the other guys working here run with it and it turned out pretty good.”
