• 60 YEARS AGO — The latest rink to join the select circle in Consol playdowns is Bill Fraser and his Franklin crew of Don Taylor, Walter Orr and Ron Petch as they won Zone 11 at Strathclair. Fraser scored a decisive victory over Bob Armstrong of Oak River.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Don Gray scored three times and Rick Hamilton twice to pace Kenton to an 11-7 NorthCentral Hockey League win over Strathclair.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Linda Van Daele and her Brandon Club rink of third Linda Frederickson, second Wendy Griffiths and lead Joyce Couling took out Mabel Mitchell at the Wheat City Curling Club’s main event final of the Brandon women’s split bonspiel.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Jolene Janzen and Bruno Sharpe of the Brandon Bluefins Swim Club won high-point trophies at the Manitoba Junior Short-Course Championships. Sharpe won six gold medals, including the 50 and 200-metre backstroke events, the 50m, 100m and 1,500m freestyle and 100m butterfly to win the high-point trophy in the 11-12 years old male category.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Roy Ching led the Bobcats with 10 kills as Brandon (16-4) cruised past Winnipeg (12-8) in three sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-23) on Friday night. Sam Tuivai finished with eight kills, while Sebastien Steigmeier had six for BU.
