More records fell and a handful of local swimmers medaled at the junior provincials swim meet at the Sportsplex this past weekend.
The Brandon Bluefins Swim Club (BBSC) hosted and the club had one of its best showings with multiple personal bests falling Friday night before a record haul of medals.
Brandon’s Bryson Wettig was named the meet’s high point winner for boys aged 11-13, meaning the male swimmer with the best overall performance in that age group in the entire meet.

“It felt good. It was cool. I thought there was another kid that won because he won more medals, but they were bronze, which doesn’t give as many points,” said the 13-year-old Wettig.
Wettig won gold in the 200-metre individual medley, the 200-metre freestyle, the 200-metre breaststroke, the 400-metre freestyle, and added a third-place finish in the 100-metre breaststroke and was already on his way home when he learned of the high point award, meaning he had to turn around and head back to the pool to collect one of the weekend’s highest honours.
“I like to improve. I get disappointed when I don’t get my best times. I just like to win,” said Wettig, adding he was thankful for the support from both the club and supporters in attendance.
“Help from coach (Barb Fay), my mom helped coach me too, and my teammates have been helping me too.”
Brandon’s Ellen Clark was named high point female for girls aged 15 and over, hauling in an impressive five first-place finishes to go with a pair of silvers.
After continually smashing records all season, Ceinwyn Griffin had three more first-place finishes in the 200-metre backstroke and breaststroke as well as the 50-metre breaststroke.
Meanwhile, fellow Brandonite Briar Small brought home two more silver medals, adding to the 10-year-old’s already growing trophy case.
“I feel really good and proud of myself,” said Small.
Small’s weekend also included a quick trip out to Boissevain on Saturday afternoon to play a hockey game, a bowling birthday party Saturday evening, volleyball practice Sunday, and somehow crammed more swimming events Sunday morning on top of an incredibly busy weekend for the young athlete.
Medalling at her home pool in front of family and friends made it extra special.
“I feel like it helped a lot. I had friends that made it to provincials this year too,” Small said.
Small’s favourite event is the breaststroke, in which she won her two medals, but prefers the distance of the 100-metre race.
“It’s not too long and it’s not too short, it’s just right.”
The competitive swim schedule includes two more meets, the Manta Grand Prix in Winnipeg Feb. 21-22 and the Bluefins Winter Thaw meet on March 1 before the ManSask Championships, one of the marquee events that sees qualified competitors from Manitoba in Saskatchewan square off in Regina March 6-9.
