BOYS
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
The first-place Wheat Kings (37-5-3) ended up with a busy four-game week in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League by sweeping Southwest, the 12th-place Central Plains Capitals (9-36-0) and the 10th-place Kenora Thistles (18-27-0).
On Monday at J&G Homes Arena in a makeup game against Kenora, Jonah Lemoine had a hat trick and Matthew Michta made 30 saves as Brandon earned a 6-0 victory.
Easten Turko, Reid Nicol and Crew Elder also scored. Morgan Blackwood blocked 32 shots for Kenora.
On Sunday at Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place, Lemoine scored twice and Cole Dupuis and Elder also sniped as Brandon took a 4-0 lead. After Central Plains replied with three goals in five minutes early in the third period to make it 4-3, Wheat Kings Ethan Stanley, Lucas Newman and Hudson Champagne all found the mesh for a 7-3 Brandon final.
Brady Low made 22 saves for Brandon, with Riley Foster blocking 46 shots for Central Plains.
On Saturday at Portage la Prairie’s Stride Place, Joe Balabanski and Ethan Stanley scored and the Wheat Kings hung on after the Capitals scored in the third period to earn a 2-1 victory. Michta made 22 saves for Brandon, with Everett Winters blocking 43 shots for Central Plains.
On Wednesday at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex, Connor Hoemsen opened the scoring for Southwest early in the second period but Nicol, Dupuis, Turko and Lemoine replied for Brandon as they scored three power-play goals and had an empty netter in a 4-1 victory.
Low made 18 saves for Brandon, with Micky Gross blocking 35 shots for Southwest.
The Wheat Kings finish up the regular season this week when Parkland visits J&G Homes Arena on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and then they head up to Thompson’s C.A. Nesbitt Arena to meet the Norman Northstars on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
SOUTHWEST COUGARS
After the loss to Brandon, the fifth-place Cougars (24-15-6) met the third-place Winnipeg Bruins (35-7-3) at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex for two games.
On Sunday, Jack Polasek scored a pair of empty-net goals to complete his hat trick and Spencer Cullen also sniped in a 4-1 Southwest victory.
Micky Gross made 31 saves for Southwest, with Jackson Hoes blocking 32 shots for Winnipeg.
On Saturday, Connor Hoemsen scored late in the third period after the Cougars feel behind 2-0 but they couldn’t find the equalizer in a 2-1 loss.
Brodie Cameron made 35 saves for Southwest, with Zak Matheson blocking 16 shots for Winnipeg.
The Cougars finish up their regular season schedule with three road games, meeting Yellowhead at the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Tuesday at 8 p.m., the Bruins at Southdale Community Centre on Saturday at 4 p.m., and the Winnipeg Wild at Hockey For All Centre on Sunday at 2:45 p.m.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The 13th-place Chiefs (7-35-2) lost to the eighth-place Interlake Lightning (21-18-5) and the third-place Winnipeg Bruins (35-7-3).
On Saturday at Teulon-Rockwood Arena, Nolan Kozak, Colby Asselstine, Alec Strachan, Ethan Bray, Grady McNish and Cooper McColl scored but the Chiefs fell 7-6 to the Lightning in a wild game. Cole Lelond made 37 saves for Yellowhead, with Seth Schaeffer and Dylan McFadyen combining to block 38 shots for Interlake.
On Thursday at Shoal Lake Communiplex, Destin Knight and Alec Strachan sniped 37 seconds apart midway through the second period to give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead, but Winnipeg scored the final three goals in a 4-2 victory. Connor Rapley was sensational, making 60 saves for Yellowhead, with Jackson Hoes blocking 36 shots for Winnipeg.
The Chiefs have their final four games at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, hosting Southwest on Tuesday at 8 p.m., Central Plains on Friday at 8 p.m., and the Interlake Lightning on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.
PARKLAND RANGERS
The sixth-place Rangers (23-20-2) dropped a pair of games to the second-place Winnipeg Wild (37-6-2) at the Hockey For All Centre on the weekend
On Sunday, Brayden Budolowski tied it up 31 seconds after Reid McIntyre gave Winnipeg an early lead, but Luca Pura’s goal midway through the second period stood as the winner in a 2-1 victory for the Wild. Piet Mierau made 40 saves for Parkland, with Justin Perreault blocking 15 shots for Winnipeg.
On Saturday, McIntyre had a pair of goals and Dawson Groen stopped 22 shots in a 6-0 Winnipeg victory. Kyle Pelletier made 30 saves for Parkland.
After the visit to Brandon on Wednesday, Parkland finishes up with games at Beuasejour’s Sun Gro Centre against the Eastman Selects on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
GIRLS PLAYOFFS
BRANDON vs YELLOWHEAD
The fifth-place Wheat Kings (15-15-2) meet the fourth-place Chiefs (17-14-1) in the quarterfinals of the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA playoffs.
Game 1 is at Shoal Lake Communiplex on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Game 2 is at J&G Homes Arena on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Game 3 is at Shoal Lake Communiplex on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
If needed, Game 4 is at J&G Homes Arena on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6:15 p.m., and Game 5 is at Shoal Lake Communiplex on Saturday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m.
WESTMAN vs WPG AVROS
The seventh-place Wildcats (13-17-2) meet the second-place Avros (27-3-2).
Game 1 is at Seven Oaks Arena on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Game 2 is at Hartney Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Game 3 is at Seven Oaks Arena on Saturday at 8 p.m.
If needed, Game 4 is at Hartney Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 8 p.m., and Game 5 is at Seven Oaks Arena on Saturday, March 1 at 6 p.m.
PEMBINA VALLEY vs WPG ICE
The sixth-place Hawks (14-17-1) meet the third-place Ice (22-8-2).
Game 1 is at Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre on Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. Game 2 is at Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre on Thursday at 8:20 p.m.
Game 3 is at Morden’s Access Event Centre on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
If needed, Game 4 is at Morden’s Access Event Centre on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m., and Game 5 is at Winnipeg’s Hockey For All Centre on Saturday, March 1 at 12:30 p.m.
INTERLAKE vs EASTMAN
The eighth-place Lightning (5-23-4) beat the ninth-place Central Plains Capitals (4-23-5) in the best-of-three, play-in series, winning 4-1 and 3-0 after losing the opener 1-0.
That earned them the dubious privilege of matching up against the first-place Selects (27-2-3).
Game 1 is at Niverville Centennial Arena on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Game 2 is at Warren Arena on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Game 3 is at Niverville Community Resource and Recreation Centre on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7:15 p.m.
If needed, Game 4 is at Stonewall’s Veterans Memorial Sports Complex on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7:15 p.m., and Game 5 is at Niverville Centennial Arena on Saturday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m.
