Former Brandon Wheat Kings forward Brett Hyland has made a strong impression at the next level.

The 21-year-old forward from Edmonton was named a second-team all-star by Canada West on Tuesday, and also earned a spot on the all-rookie team. Hyland, 22, who spent four seasons in Brandon, had 13 goals, 20 assists, 43 penalty minutes and a plus-minus of +21 with his hometown Alberta Golden Bears.

He was joined on the all-rookie team by a former Brandon teammate, defenceman Logen Hammett. Hammett, a Regina product who suited up with the Calgary Dinos, had a goal and 12 assists in 20 games.

He spent three seasons in Brandon prior to finishing up as an overage with the Vancouver Giants.

Canada West also handed out its women’s hockey awards, with former Westman Wildcats goalie Grace Glover of Boissevain earning the nod as the first-team all-star goalie.

The Alberta goaltender appeared in 15 regular season games, posting a 0.73 goals-against average, .962 save percentage and 13-2-0 record in her second U Sports season.

She spent three seasons with the Wildcats, graduating after the 2022-23 campaign.
