The Brandon Wheat Kings have taken a two-game lead in their best-of-five Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League quarterfinal series.
Late Monday, the first-place Wheat Kings (40-5-3) scored the first six goals of the game en route to a 6-2 win over the eighth-place Eastman Selects (23-20-5).
Underage forward Reid Nicol had a hat trick and an assist, and Aiden Laing, Jonah Lemoine and Ethan Stanley also scored.
Calyb Moore and Malachi Thiessen replied in the last five minutes of regulation for Eastman. Matthew Michta stopped 37 shots for Brandon, while Wyatt Minsky and Samuel Fontaine combined to make 23 saves for Eastman.
Game 3 is back at J&G Homes Arena tonight at 7:30 p.m.
If necessary, Game 4 is set for the Sun Gro Centre on Friday at 5:30 p.m., and Game 5 would be back at J&G Homes Arena on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Elsewhere, the fifth-place Southwest Cougars (26-16-6) raced to a 2-0 series lead against the fourth-place Winnipeg Thrashers (29-16-3) with a 7-3 victory.
Jack Swaenepoel had two goals, one of which was shorthanded, and Eric Berger, Jack Polasek, Shane Elder, Lynden Gould and Kole Beard also sniped.
Ryden Duchon, Crosby Harrison and Mason Mykichuk replied for Winnipeg.
Southwest’s Micky Gross stopped 22 shots, while Winnipeg’s Hudson Hunnie made 21 saves.
Game 3 is slated for Seven Oaks Community Centre on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
If needed, Game 4 will be played at Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex on Friday at 7:30 p.m., with Game 5 set for Seven Oaks Community Centre on Saturday at 7 p.m
Elsewhere, the third-place Winnipeg Bruins (35-8-5) went up two games in their series against the sixth-place Pembina Valley Hawks (23-27-8) with a 4-1 victory at Morden’s Access Event Centre.
In the other series, the seventh-place Interlake Lightning (24-19-5) were in action last night at Teulon-Rockwood Arena against the second-place Winnipeg Wild (40-6-2) in a game that ended after deadline.
The Wild lead the series 1-0 after a 7-0 rout on Saturday.
