All four quarterfinal series ended in sweeps in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League playoffs on Wednesday.

The most dramatic finish came at the Seven Oaks Community Centre when Connor Hoemsen scored 34 seconds into double overtime for a 2-1 victory by the Southwest Cougars over the Winnipeg Thrashers in the best-of-five quarterfinal.

Kaden Sutherland opened the scoring in the first period for Winnipeg and Lynden Gould tied it 8:25 into the third period.

Southwest’s Micky Gross made 27 saves and Winnipeg’s Tate Barnaby stopped 29 shots.

Southwest won the earlier games 3-2 in double overtime on Saturday and 7-3 on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Brandon Wheat Kings scored twice in the first 92 seconds and rolled to a 7-1 victory over the Eastman Selects at J&G Homes Arena. Reid Nicol had a hat trick, Cole Dupuis scored twice, and Jaxson Brick and Ethan Stanley also sniped, with Daniel De Gagne replying for Eastman.

Jonah Lemoine had four assists.

Brandon’s Brady Low made 39 saves, with Eastman’s Wyatt Minsky and Samuel Fontaine stopping 39 shots

The Wheat Kings beat the Selects 4-3 in double overtime in the series opener on Saturday and 6-2 on Monday.

In the closest game of their series, Ludovic Perreault scored with 24 seconds left in regulation to give the Winnipeg Wild a 4-3 victory over the Interlake Lightning at the Hockey For All Centre.

Interlake’s Dylan McFadyen made 39 saves, with Winnipeg’s Dawson Groen stopping 16 shots.

In the earlier games, Winnipeg won 7-0 on Saturday and 4-2 on Tuesday.

Finally, the Winnipeg Bruins scored three unanswered goals in a 3-1 victory over the Pembina Valley Hawks at Southdale Community Centre.

Winnipeg’s Zak Matheson had 33 saves and Pembina Valley’s Karsen Dyck made 34 saves.

The Bruins won 5-2 on Saturday and 4-1 on Monday.

That means the semifinals will feature two regional series, with the Wheat Kings meeting the Cougars in Westman, and the Bruins and Wild tangling in Winnipeg.
