IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 40 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Wheat Kings lost 6-4 to Saskatoon Blades to finish last overall in the WHL with a 17-54-1 record. Derek Laxdal scored all four goals for the Wheaties.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Marty Murray has added the WHL’s highest individual honour to a resumé already filled with personal triumphs. The 20-year-old captain of the Brandon Wheat Kings received the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the league’s player of the year.
• 20 YEARS AGO — The Souris Elks won their second-straight SouthWest Hockey League title by beating the Pierson Bruins 3-1 Wednesday night. Ashley Robertson, Tyler Butler and Mark Ryckman scored for the Elks, who swept the best-of-seven final in four games to win their fourth SWHL title in five years. Marty Murray replied for the Bruins.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The owner, general manager and head coach of the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings, Kelly McCrimmon will put on a new hat this summer: coach of Canada’s national under-18 team. Hockey Canada has chosen McCrimmon as the head coach for its summer under-18 men’s team.
