The Killarney Shamrocks beat the Virden Oil Kings 4-2 late Thursday at Tundra Oil and Gas Place to win the Tiger Hills Hockey League championship.

The Shamrocks, who previously won titles in 1993-94, 2011-12, 2015-16 and 2016-17, won the best-of-five final 3-1. Killarney opened the series with 5-1 and 4-2 victories, with Virden extending the series in Game 3 with a 5-2 win.

After Ty Lewis and Jeremy Johnson gave the Oil Kings a 2-0 lead in the first period, Mike Reykdal scored twice for the Shamrocks in the second period and Jesse Toth also sniped to put Killarney up 3-2.

Ty Enns then added an insurance marker in the third period.

Brian Archibald made 29 saves in the win, with Virden’s Eric Reid turning aside 20 shots.

The final pitted the league’s top teams against other, with Virden (13-2-0-1) finishing first in the West Division and Killarney (14-1-1-0) winning the East Division in the 12-team league.

Killarney won the best-of-five division semifinal in three games over the Neepawa Farmers, and were then stretched to five games in the division final by the Rivers Jets.

In its path to the final, Virden swept the Melita Bisons in the semifinals and the Hartney Blues in the division final.

Killarney’s Enns was named playoff MVP after leading all scorers with 33 points in 12 games, three more than the 30 points posted by Virden’s Bradley Bowles. Bowles won the regular season scoring title with 54 points in 15 games, six more than Enns produced.

Killarney now faces the Ste. Anne Aces in the best-of-three Manitoba senior ‘A’ provincial final. Game 1 is set for Ste. Anne on Sunday at 3 p.m., with Game 2 scheduled for Killarney on Saturday, April 5 at 7 p.m.

If needed, Game 3 would be played on Sunday, April 6, but the details haven’t been finalized.
