IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 50 YEARS AGO — Chalmers and Hay blasted Hamilton and Jones 13-3 in a one-game semifinal in the Brandon Commercial Hockey League championship. Laurie Deroo paced the winners with a three-goal, four-assist performance. Jim Ferguson also netted three goals.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Terry Fowler, one of two Brandon DOTC boxing club members fighting in Dunseith, N.D., emerged victorious with a third-round technical knockout.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Michael Burgess’ life in racquetball just keeps getting better. The Vincent Massey student was named the province’s male junior athlete of the year at the Sport Manitoba Night of Champions awards celebration at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
• 10 YEARS AGO — The Wheat City Golf Course will open seven holes (No. 10 and 13-18) on April 24. Management and staff hope to have nine holes ready by June 1 and all 18 operational by Aug. 1. Special spring rates allow all-you-can-golf for the seven holes at $15 without a cart and $30 with a cart until May 30.
