The Brandon Wheat Kings are likely about to lose somebody from their 50-man roster in the upcoming expansion draft for the Penticton Vees.
The Western Hockey League announced the expansion draft will be held on May 7, the day before the first round of the main draft. Each of the other 22 teams in the league will lose one player, although trades are permitted in lieu of an expansion pick.
Teams have two options on who they can protect from their 50-player, injured, suspended, graduate, special import and 20-year-old lists, plus an additional six players appearing on their college list.
• 16 players — Anyone aged 17 to 20 years old.
• 17 players — 14 players aged 17 to 19 years old and three 20-year-old players.
The Vees were awarded the fourth pick overall in the first round of the main draft and the U.S. priority draft, and the fourth WHL pick in the first round of the 2025 CHL import draft. They will be allowed to dress four 20-year-old players next season instead of the standard three.
In other league news, Everett Silvertips defenceman Landon DuPont has won the Jim Piggott memorial trophy as WHL rookie of the year.
DuPont, who was the first defenceman and second player in WHL history to be granted exceptional status that allowed him to play at 15, led all rookies with 17 goals and 43 assists in 64 games.
He is just the eighth defenceman in 58 seasons to win the award: The last one was Seth Jones of the Portland Winterhawks in 2012-13.
Also, the Calgary Hitmen have been awarded the Jim Donlevy memorial trophy as the scholastic team of the year after achieving an overall high school academic average of 88 percent across 45 courses.
