Darcy Howarth rode a hot start to win the Grey Owl golf tournament in the cold on Sunday.
The MacGregor native opened the 63rd annual event at Clear Lake Golf course with a 3-under 69 on Friday, then carded a 76 in wet, cold and windy conditions to finish 1 over and win by three.
“It’s hard to believe,” Howarth told Grey Owl director Kirk Penton after winning. “I’ve been coming to this tournament for 20 years, and I love it. It’s fun, and I’m here to have a good time, and I never thought I’d compete or win it.”
Howarth finished three shots clear of Brandon’s Jared Jacobson, with Dave Spurr and past champions Nick Myhre and Jay Thiesen five strokes behind.
Ron Cornell won the Greyer Owl (60+) title with rounds of 71 and 78.
