• 60 YEARS AGO — The Souris Cardinals scored eight runs in the last three innings for a 9-7 win over the Riverside Canucks in a Manitoba Senior Baseball League game. Don Hunter tagged two hits to lead the Cardinals.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Bob Thompson of Brandon Cloverleafs and Barry (Sam) Jamieson of McAuley Blazers are the first two Manitoba Senior Baseball League players named to the 17-man squad that will represent this province in the Canadian Senior baseball championships in Vancouver.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Jack Witt’s 23 points helped the Celtics beat the Lakers 82-75 in a Brandon University Spring Men’s Basketball league game. John Carson poured in 43 points for the Lakers.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Reed Eastley was prepared for the possibility he might be passed over in the major league baseball draft, but then the Seattle Mariners tipped their hand. Eastley became the first Brandonite to be chosen in the draft in more than a decade when the American League’s Mariners selected him with their 13th-round pick (383rd overall) on Tuesday, the first day of the draft.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Jordan Papirny knows what’s at stake. The Brandon Wheat Kings goaltender heads to Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence camp on Friday in Etobicoke, Ont., looking to make a strong impression as he works for a spot on Canada’s world junior team in December.
